It gives me no pleasure to report that I have dropped a brand new chain (all my own fault) and stuffed a good part of it into the very little space surrounding the driving sprocket.
The left hand crank case has taken a little damage in that the ridge that holds the thread for the top sprocket cover bolt has been ground down. Still a little thread, but not much.
Bike is a road registered 2002 xr250L and I need some sort of sprocket cover for rego.
Anybody had experience of such damage?
Can anydody advise me of where to get a second hand left crankcase, and how much would be a fair price?
How compatible are the various model xr250 crank cases?

Riverright. I had the chain come off my XR650 and cause a little bit of case damage similar to what you described. I fitted a case saver from XR’s only and that uses the two cover bolts and the rear engine mount.
The top screw hole is all but smashed out but the third mounting point on the engine mount compensates for its loss.
Maybe you could try something like that and just fit the sprocket cover to the case saver.
It is a big job to replace an engine case. I would also think that the cases are made as a pair and it wont be as simple as changing one case. (someone correct me if I am wrong)

Post up a photo if you can riverright. Someone might be able to give you some options if we can see to damage.

You might not have to buy another crank case, maybe some devcon type putty will hold the bolt in good enough for rego and then find a more permenant fix.

Can I ask how the chain decided to depart from the sprocket? Might be a trap for others fitting a new chain.

    Good luck with it mate.

Bike is with mechanic so no photos at the moment.

I was sizing up chain to fit, got distracted so “temporarily” fitted clip.

And of course I forgot it was only fitted temporarily.

Made a little less than 100 metres.

Engine cases do come as a pairs, I patched a crankcase on a tt600 after throwing a chain with metal putty and put 10,000 more k’s on it before i sold it with no problems!! I know someone that used metal putty and then drilled and put a thread in the stuff and it worked so its good stuff. You can also get the case welded too. Good luck with it and keep us posted.

Mick, I’ll look into the case saver, sounds like it might work.

Later: I see what you mean about the case saver. I will probably go with one when I can find the right one to order.

Anyone have recomendations for wreckers or second hand Honda parts in Aus?

Mechanic determined there was enough thread left in the crankcase to hold the top sprocket cover bolt.
With the help of a spacer and $160 later all is good.
    Whew!
