Hey guys, I want to replace the seat foam on my bike and need to re staple. Can someone tell me whether I need a Pneumatic staple gun or will a heavy duty spring loaded gun get through the plastic? Thanks Steve

September 4, 2011 at 10:58 pm #208229Steve I have tried with cordless stapler, power stapler and didn’t really have much luck, I ended up getting Suttos to do it for me, they use an air stapler, the problem with the electric one was I couldn’t get the staple to penetrate far enough you could use it and then bang them all the way in with a hammer…
Cheers
Chris.September 4, 2011 at 10:59 pm #208223Found it was cheaper to get the Upholsterer to staple the seat cover back on – cost $35 where the stapler was going to cost upwards of $50 to $100 for a reasonable one.
September 4, 2011 at 11:52 pm #208224I’ve done a seat recover with a mechanical stapler & 5mm staples bought from Bunnings.
Had no problem getting them in, just hold the stapler hard against the seat base so it isn,t forced away when stapling
September 5, 2011 at 12:09 am #208225Hmmm, probably would be cheaper to get the local upholsterer to do it but I like to have a crack at things myself and could use a stapler for other things I need to do around the house.
I might try a mechanical stapler from the hardware tomorrow on the seat before I pull the old cover off.
Thanks for the replies.September 5, 2011 at 1:53 am #208235We are serial seat tearers here, so between Mrs Cee and i we have become fairly adept at this task, some gripper material from the upholsters a heat gun and a good pneumatic upholsters staple gun and you can do yer own for years to come.
Gunna do the IT next week for Josh, the square eadged seat will be a bit of a challenge but nothing impossible, have tried quite few good mechanical and electric staplers… my advice is go airSeptember 5, 2011 at 2:00 am #208236I bought a Project Air stapler from Bunnings for about $57 (as I had a few other jobs that were hard work with the hand stapler) and it worked great when I replaced the foam and cover on my 690.
Was going to get a local upholsterer to do it but they were too busy, wanted to charge a ridiculous price or weren’t there when arranged to get it done.

I got a few rows of stainless staples, Bunnings stapler and all is good.

September 5, 2011 at 11:39 am #208226Well $57 isn’t much for a pneumatic one that works so I might check them out. Cheers
January 24, 2013 at 10:14 am #208227sounds like it worked at the end with the seats you wanted to replace .
January 24, 2013 at 10:27 am #208228I brought this little beast from a local tool store for a tad under $50 to do to seat on my husky.

It’s so strong I had to turn the reg on my compressor down as it would shoot staples straight through the seat pan. Bonus the misses brought some new ikea bedroom furniture for the girl recently. This made putting on draw bottoms and cupboard backs easy work.
PS. Any exuse will do to buy a new tool.
January 24, 2013 at 11:13 am #235961yep go the air stapler evey day avoid the Ozito ones they are crap.
