Folks, I have just replaced my Metzeler Tourance tires on my Yamaha Tenere XT660Z with an odo reading of 9233 km. The Tourances are still good for probably another 6000 km and were fantastic on sealed roads. That said, they are too sealed road orientated and lacks grip on loose surfaces. For my kind of riding that consists of daily commuting in Sydney and weekend long rides on a combination of sealed and unsealed roads, I researched many websites and decided that for me the Heidenau K60 is the best compromise. I also went up a size on the rear from 130/80×17 to 140/80×17 as my weekend rides are usually fully loaded comprising of rider and passenger and luggage. All up this can weight around 180kg and I feel that the additional load rating of the 140 over the 130 can only be a good thing.
I thought about going for full nobblies but I can’t really justify it for my kind of riding and ultimately I needed to consider all weather safety whilst tackling the daily Sydney traffic jungle commute.
That said, many folks will have different opinions aligned with their own needs and should follow their own instinct. As for me, I am now in the process of scrubbing in the Heidenaus and am very impressed with their initial grip levels on sealed roads. I will be testing it this weekend on the dirt following Krusty.

September 6, 2011 at 11:03 pm #208351I had these tyres on when I bought my Tenere , they had done 2200km when I picked it up. I rode 300km home and was very impressed on the road.
I then road to Sydney ( 780km) and swapped to knobbies for the high country rideI then put them on and rode to Comboyne to meet Greg and Chicken ( 300km ).
So all up they have done 3580km on the tar.
They are a great rode tyre for sure , heaps of all round grip.
I rode from Comboyne through a very wet Bago to Micknmelds house. This was a different story. In the red clay I lacked traction and they filled the grip quickly which made things a bit sketchy.
On the gravel fire roads they were great , heaps of traction and good fun !!
Just avoid clay TT and I reckon you’ll love’em !!!They are still only half worn so I think they are good for about 8000km
Look forward to your thoughts on then
Nick
September 10, 2011 at 8:51 pm #208355After my great ride out with Krusty yesterday, I can now safely say that my new K60 tires are scrubbed in for all terrain
By comparison to the last week’s ride over the same convict trail with the Metzeler Tourances, the Heidenau K60 are a huge step forward. They are not knobblies and do struggle a bit in wet Aussie clay but they hook up like there is no tomorrow in dry terrain and was pretty good on the sand and loose gravel patches. I managed to get trough everything without too much trouble and think they are pretty close to ideal for all terrain adventure touring. They also handle sealed roads and fast corners pretty well.
In short, I am pretty happy with my decision and feel that the K60s are perfect for my type of usage.

November 12, 2011 at 9:05 pm #208511Folks,
I have now clocked 5000km on the Heidenau K60 Scouts. This is what they look like after 5000km.
Front

Rear

My findings are:
On road: They are fine for commuting in all weather in Sydney. They do not railtrack on uneven road seams and grip everywhere I have ridden them on sealed roads. They are fine on fast road surfaces and corners (just ask the guys on their “superbikes” this morning that got left behind in the tight Putty Road corners
)
Gravel: Overall they are acceptable on gravel. I would give them 6 out of 10 on loose gravel. Hard packed gravel they are OK. The front does not grip well in off road corner angles and does not instill confidence in off road corners. It does stop bloody well though when upright and in a straigh line (as good as anything I know to be honest). The rear on the orther hand grips when the bike is leaned over but easily looses traction when upright.
Mud: These are not mud tyres and clog easily and make for wide eye rides in slippery mud. They are better that Metzeler Tourances in mud though but still scary.
Overall: I would happily recommend them for on road usage on all surfaces and weather conditions or for long hard pack off road surface tours. This is a very good long lasting 50/50 tyre but certainly not a hard core off road tyre.

February 6, 2012 at 6:22 pm #211711After 10,000km this is what the Heidenau K60 Scouts look like on my Tenere. I believe they are still good for at least another 2 – 3,000km. All up, not a bad choice if you spend most of your travels on road or hard packed surfaces. Oh, and they still grip like there is no tomorrow in corners on tar surfaces

February 7, 2012 at 9:00 pm #215613On the recent High Country ride the loan BMW F800 I used was fitted with these and again they were great on the tar and ok on the hard pack but any loose surface on top lead to some sideways action when exiting a corner under heavy throttle.
They struggled for traction with the extra power of the 800 and I think are much better suited to the gentler power delivery of the Tenere ( or i need to fine tune my throttle control skills !!) The one wet area we hit was terrifying and had me changing to MX loops the next day
February 7, 2012 at 9:25 pm #208352Thats amazing! If I got 10,000 out of a rear tyre It would go in a frame on the shed wall!!
February 7, 2012 at 9:57 pm #215749Boulder, I guess the trick is to roll on the throttle as opposed to treating it like a binary switch with either idle or full throttle as the only two options!
Then again, I suspect that many Old Bulls ride that way!
February 7, 2012 at 10:56 pm #208353“Fair cop” mate!!
Its good to see a tyre that gives such good mileage and still grips thanks for sharing it with us.
I have a trip planned in the future with some black top factored in and will keep this post in mind. -
