OK so Lefty being a engine builder, racing car setup guru has lots of excellent toys at his workshop. One such toy (isn’t really a toy  ) is a set of digital scales used for weighing the race cars and getting the balance right. These things are accurate and a good bit of kit.

So there is always talk of this bike is heavy, this weighs to much, manufacturers claimed weight (that always makes me laugh) peoples opinions blah blah blah

So this thread will be going for a while I hope and every bike I can get I will put over these scales. Maybe we can even get them to a big ride and while sober weigh some bikes who knows

    We have weighed 3 bikes,

DR400, with around 5 litres of fuel in it. It has a big tank (its basically empty) an alloy rack and a bash plate. Claimed weight from Suzuki is Dry weight: 119.0 kg (262.4 pounds) Thats dry weight add 2 litres of oil and 2 litres of coolant would weigh maybe 5 kilos plus the 5 litres of fuel that is maybe 10kilos extra at a stretch. Thats around 129kg right.

    On the scales

Yes thats 148 kilos  thats bloody 20 kilos heavier than claimed !!!

Next was Deejays DR650 in full ADV spec and about 4 litres of fuel.
Claimed Wet Weight (kg) 166 but remember we have added heaps of accessories but got rid of that heavy exhaust. We added ultra heavy duty tubes and heavier tyres, rim locks etc it

Here it is on the scales

    Actual weight

    So its as claimed ;)

Next we weighed Chicken’s old XR 600, it has a big tank with about. OK the butt of all the tractor jokes etc. It has an alloy rack etc fitted, ultra heavy duty tubes etc. Whats it weigh, same as a D6 I can hear Mal5.1 saying
Claimed weight, Weight incl. oil, gas, etc: 139.0 kg (306.4 pounds)

Thats lighter than the DR400

I am sure Lefty said he weighed his WR250 when he had it, maybe he can add that. He may have also weighed his KTM450 I would like to see that as well if he has.
We will weigh my Tenere and XR 650 and take photos as well. I will get Deejay or Chris72a’s KTM400 as well. Can we get ol mates 390 Berg one day Lefty?

It was very interesting I thought espically the DR400

    Very interesting actually ,,
Makes me wonder about the 690 (claimed weight of 138kg dry)

The DR650 is amazing coming in right on with all that gear added and only really the heavy pipe removed from standard trim

    #208691

Just on the claimed dry weight for the drz400. 119kg is for the US spec E with has no ADR shit, doesn’t even come with speedo. Wet weight for Aus E is 138kg with 10 litres of fuel. Given the bike you weighed has a rear and panier racks, a bash plate and big tank which would weigh more than standard then add an extra 5 litres of fuel and i’d say Suzuki Australia have over estimated the weight of the DRZ.

How come we didn’t see the Tenere hit the scales, don’t they go that high. :P

    #208698

    Hey Scotty,

I mentioned to TB to bring the Tenere around to weigh it, but i need to service the forklift to get it on the scales.  No seriously! We started to pull Chickens XR630 engine apart for a full rebuild. But that will be on another thread stay tuned. ;)

    Cheers,
    Lefty

That Big ass tank is 2-3 times heavier than the stock tank and fins empty…

I would like mine done in Trail Mode… Just for curiosity sake as to what I ride with as it is.. I don’t really care about what a manufacturer says as we all make major mods that throw it all out the window imo…

Did you read the thread or just worry about the DR

I said “We will weigh my Tenere and XR 650 and take photos as well” Only so much can be done at one time. I dont care what it weighs  This isnt about brand, or bike or a pissing contest, its just for interest ok so deep breathes people

Now all the claimed specs I have got from the same internerd site and will continue that if I can. Some are given in dry spec some in wet spec ok

All the above bikes have bash plates, all have big tanks, all alloy racks and around the same amount of fuel. The DR650 has racks as well, they only weigh around 2 kilos.

All the ADR gear you talk about couldnt weight 20kilos, after all its only blinkers, wires, speedo and a head light basically

This isnt about brand, or bike or a pissing contest, its just for interest

Not picking here Krusty but whats 2 – 3 times heavy really mean, thats your opinion? I have both here, I reckon having just had the two, the steel DR650 tank and the 30 litres huge ass Safari tank in my hands there wouldnt be much difference, but whats much
Would there be much difference between a plastic and a steel tank? The steel is thin, the plastic is thick that would be interesting :)

Bring your DR in trail mode we will weigh it and then try it in ADV mode, what do you think the difference will be, cause any figure I use will be plucked outa my arse

    Lets weigh them

As would I King, like I said maybe we can get Lefty to drag them to a major ride one day and while we are sober have a competition to guess the weight of a particular bike as well :woohoo: :woohoo:

Hey it was my idea  But a huge thanks to Lefty for making it happen, he is a champion and people with bike troubles in Sydney should give some thought to using his mechanical services. He is rebuilding Chickens spare 630 big fin head but more on that on another thread eh Lefty

    Hey Boonsta,

That’s a mighty fine looking DRZ400 (Bannana) in the photo. 18 months old now and yes, I do ride it.
It will be on the market after the Camerons run.

    What’s next ???????

Maybe the coffs ride would be a good place for the weigh in. A guessing the weight of a certain bike would be a good competition. Im sure a few would like to know there weights and if they have a difference to someone elses bike of the same make and model!
