Would be interested to know what..if any, communication systems old bulls use when on rides ?
I have just purchased a Uniden uhf cb handheld UH076SX-NB.. :cheer:
Steve from adventure Moto is just in the process in tracking down a com system that will hook up to my helmet.
I know a few fellas use the blue tooth connection…but what about big group rides?…bike to bike 2 way would be great with big mobs :woohoo:
Imagine the yapping that would go on…no need for ipods..instant entertainment  .
Not to mention the fact a good 2 way would be bloody handy out in the bush, trucks, stations, out back pubs..and giving a gob full to a caravan as you over take itBol :woohoo:

September 19, 2011 at 9:32 pm #209210I wonder if the ear piece and mike that comes in the kits would work on the bike? The rechargeable batteries that come with the Unidens do well, I have used mine for a week on end without charge(using 10 or so times a day).
Happy to loan mine out for your ride if it proves useful.
September 19, 2011 at 9:44 pm #209211I’v been runnning a Uniden UH 078SX for the past couple of years, which is pretty much the same as the 076SX.
Its a top unit, There is a guy on ADV rider that makes a really nice mounting bracket for these Uniden radios. Around $100 from memory and its a top bit of gear.I run mine through an Autocom system, I run Ipod, UHF and phone all through the system. With a push to talk button mounted on the handlebars. The Ipod turns itself down the minute the phone rings or silence is broken on the UHF.
September 19, 2011 at 9:46 pm #209212Talk to this bloke Boll http://www.dmme.com.au/
He is an ADV member & Steve from ADV Moto would know him anyway….
Apparently he is good with this stuff, it is his businessSeptember 19, 2011 at 10:05 pm #209226badbowie wrote:I’v been runnning a Uniden UH 078SX for the past couple of years, which is pretty much the same as the 076SX.

Lotsa has been playing around with a sytem using PTT on the bars but you have to have an umbilical cord to your helmet.
I looked at it, but if you want to go wireless you need the autocom system with bluetooth etc, etc, etc and the cost ends up about $1000 with the good UHF radio, rugged mounting system etc, then to get better range they fit a separate larger aerial to the bike. So it can work out to be fairly expensive.
You can get a VOX operated mike in your helmet and have a cable to the radio say in your back pack, but you still have a cable to your helmet.
We decided to do as TB has done and use Scala bluetooth units – they say the new G4 has a range of up to 1.6km  (would be line of sight when alls good) Anyway we will see how good they are on the trip.Mickp
September 19, 2011 at 10:12 pm #209213I spotted Scala Headsets at SCA the other day on clearance for $155
or have you already got them Mick ?September 19, 2011 at 10:21 pm #209227EAGLE`02 wrote:I spotted Scala Headsets at SCA the other day on clearance for $155
or have you already got them Mick ?Yeh the Q2’s are about that but we got the G4’s @ $200 to see how they go. They are physically larger than the Q2 and have a flip up aerial for better range in the open stuff – we’ll see

Give us a report after camerons (they should be grouse)September 20, 2011 at 12:01 am #209215Bollocks,
I use a GME 3 watt radio and a headset purchased from NZ. Sam and Merv also have the same setup and it works well
We have also had others on rides with a two way in their back pack, if they got lost or crash and injured (as happened on one ride) they can call you up
Here is the link (its a wierd site)
http://www.amalgamate2000.com/sales/motorcycle__communications.htm
He can supply the “K” series headset to suit any brand of radio, Uniden and GME are common ones he supplies.
I can get spare parts for these headsets from Jaycar.
Adam.
September 20, 2011 at 6:41 pm #209216Thanks for that Eages and Adam…just spoke to Mike from “accross the Ditch” (your bloke Adam) good bloke…he is as funny as his website
May have what im looking for..gotta check a few things out first as this 2 way is a bit new to the market.
i have to check out something about plugs and threads.etc..no idea what he was talking about
Bol :woohoo:September 20, 2011 at 7:15 pm #209374UHF’s are what we use with the speaker mic strapped to vest/backpack, then wired an ear piece to handset so all is independent to helmet- found the handset really good in single and to talk, but in the open a bit hard to hear, thats why we connected the earpiece. We have one for sweep, one for lead and one in mid pack. Found that the earpiece with the little activation button was to hard to find(flaps about in the breeze)whereas the big button on the right shoulder(handset)is easy as.
Sewed a pouch into the back of the vests so that when you change lead/sweep etc the uhf goes with it.hatto
