Could be the difference between getting away for the weekend or being stuck at home with no hot water and a $1000 bill for a new service. Make sure the wife see’s the old one and knows how good you are :) . String the job out from 5 minutes to 30 minutes or so with a magazine if your toilet is in the same location as the hot water service.

Anodes?? Hot Water service?? Never heard of such a thing, where do you get to it?
I understand what an anode does but I didn’t realise my hot water system would have one and that it is a servicable item? A 20 year old Rheem would no doubt have one??

Can someone point me to where I would find this thing on my continuous gas unit. :P

Nope never knew that. Not such a simple job to do at my place, I have a rain water tank, 3 inches above the top of the water heater. I would have to pull the heater out to get the anode out.
It is all too hard. Lucky I have a brother in law that is a plumber.

Breathing is too hard for you I think   But if you are lucky enough and can get him to do it will save you a fortune mate ;) I know this because I fell into the trap once, knew it was there just didnt do anything about it :(

    Again good tip

Mine was 15 years old so I would say your anode will be like mine  . For the sake of $40 it might be worth pulling the HWS out. I didn’t know mine had one until a mate lost his and his plumber said it could have been prevented with routine replacement of the anode. Steve

Bloody hell!! Now I know it is there, watch it stuff up in the next 4 weeks or so.

And I know if I pull the tank out to do a “simple job” watch something else in there stuff up and I will have to fix that as well!! Then I will wish I had left the whole freaking thing alone in the first place.

So when the anode wears out and is no longer there to be sacrificied which bit starts corroding. I’m guessing it’s the metal coil in there that carrys the water. Then you get the leak and hence a stuffed system. Is that right.

Here’s a little more incentive to check it Mick………..thanks to all the “sky’s falling, planet’s cooking, ice is melting” panick merchant tree huggers, you can’t (or soon want be able to) buy the old style element type system!!!!! You’ll have to replace it with a ‘heat pump’ type unit which costs mega bucks (not the $1000 or so)

My mates tank corroded but any metal bits would be at risk due to electrolysis. I think most tanks are coated with ceramic but will eventually rust away. Steve

Thing is the bolt at the top of the anode is bigger than most peoples basic tool kit. A mate said by a cheap socket and weld a long pipe to it like a breaker bar.
Mines only 8 years old so should be right for another couple.

27mm was my rheem anode. Just needed a ratchet.
