    I have just bought a 96 CR250. Its in pretty good condition. Has a FMF Fatty pipe and silencer. New sticker kit. Appears to have been well maintained.
    Now I have never owned a 2 stroke or a motocrosser for that matter before. I took it out for a ride around my little motocross track the other afternoon and I love it. Pulls way harder in the mid range than my CRF450X and is miles lighter as well. Didn’t really test out the top end as I need a bit more time on it first. It steers unreal but I havnt fiddled with the suspension yet, the forks seem a little harsh.
    It was only meant to be a bit of fun till I bought a new bike to replace the CRF450X, but I loved riding it so much I think I might race my local club motocross on it next year and maybe even do a couple of pony express’ on it. It may be a bit of a handful for the pony express though.
    I think I have become a two stoke convert. I have never owned a two stroke before.

    I had a 97 CR250 (First with alloy frame) and a mate had a 96 (steel frame) both great bikes with heaps of grunt, the only issue I had with mine and the 96 wasn’t much better was that it had scary headshakes, spent heaps on suspension to try to sort it but never did I read later it had alot to do with there frames being very rigid????

    Would be interesting to compare your lap times to see if it is actually quicker or just feels faster. I rode one two years back at north star and it made my Y Z 450 feel soft in the suspension. And the throttle felt like it had only 2 positions. I hope you are fit if you want to use it for pony x duties. :)

    Yeah I am not too sure on riding it in pony express either lol.

    too late you’re hooked now Jimmy, I’m fat, over forty and I’m still riding smokers……

    wouldn’t have it any other way, sure if you’re racing for sheep stations a modern 4t will give you a better chance, but grin for grin, the 2T wins every time.

    96 was a good year, the Great JMcGrath used his ’96 until 98……. I owned a sucession of CR250s from the late 80s to early ninties, brilliant steerers, top mid-range and good weight bias, suspension (forks) needed valving and springs to get them up to Kayaba standard

    played with the suspension clickers this arvo. Its got a great back end. Just cruises over logs and rocks.The forks are still a bit harsh.
    Brakes are a bit weak but could just need new pads and fluid.
    Doesn’t have the snap off the bottom the 450 has. You need to fan the clutch to pop the front wheel over stuff that the 450 just lifts over, but it just hammers in the mid to top end.
    I reckon if the forks and brakes can be sorted that my 96 model bike will still be a competitive bike. 2k vrs 12k. Have bikes really improved in 15 years?
