I have been looking at used bikes and have noticed a few ads have no kms only hours. I was wondering at what stage do alarm bells start ringing ? I know if I saw 200,000 on a petrol car then problems could start arising but what about a 250 dirtbike ? I realize maintainance, ride style and terrain are all factors but as an average trailrider carrying out regular home maintainance what would be considered a lot of hours ?

    Thanks

    Nick

It is diffucult to say Nick. Alot depends on the service history, how it has been ridden etc. You could have a bike/car with very little hrs/kms on it and if it has not been serviced at the correct intervals, oil changes etc. It could be 3 parts shagged or vice versa. It is really hard to judge sometimes. IMO

My Safari bike would of had around 50 hours at the finish line, Jake or Todd Smiths around 10 less, any of these bikes could be due for a fresh top end at least.

Any of these bikes once converted back to original you could never see that they had been through Safari, they look like almost new when put up for sale after the event.

    Buyer beware

That’s a good point SB , I know it’s hard to guess how the bikes been treated but I have seen bikes with 2000km advertised and just a visual inspection can tell you the life they’ve had. I am trying to gauge what hours means in trailriding km , not a murphsberg or Evmaniacs type of ride but just average singletrack riding.
Eg Would 50 hours be about 2000 km ?? I’m not sure ?

I know buying used is a gamble and everobes maintainance is different but I’m just not sure about hours ? And why would they only have hours ? Is this reason to be suspicious ?

    Nick,

It also puzzles me that they have no ODO reading.

Did they disconnect the ODO to hide the actual Km’s

Or are they slack with fixing things that break or come loose

At least with honest km’s and hours you can gauge what sort of riding they may have been doing :S

    Nick,

You could get an idea from your own bike ;)

You know where you’ve ridden, how far thats been and how long it took

Sam’s CRF250X when he put new valves in it got a new piston but the old piston had bugger all signs of wear :)

He rides quite quickly but doesn’t flog it to do it, yet you come across slower riders who rev the guts out of their bikes and achieve less

As sb_250y said buyer beware, if it looks like it’s been flogged it probably has, keep a little cash in reserve for a bit of maintenance and if you don’t need to spend it on the bike I’m sure the boss would spend it for you :P

Average single trail is around 20-30 kmh, so I guess you can work it out from there.

Safari 50 hours = 4000km, alot of high speed on the power riding.

    Hi Nick
My take is a day’s riding is about 6 hrs riding (you go for 8 But with stops lunch etc) and in that about 100-120kms general mix of riding, so 2400km = 120hrs- (ball park idea) best thing I have found is your gut instinct, listen to it, look at their other belongings (car, house, yard etc) usually if they look after those, then they look after their bikes. Ask if a member of forum like this, then read up on ride reports, can give good idea of riding they do and break downs ,conditions, damage etc. second hand is always a gamble, be prepared to fix it up. I bought the last model with the RFS motor because all of the issues had been fixed over the years. This has proved good as now has 11000kms (no issues)

Yes-what sounds better : only 50 hrs – or it’s done 4000kms (SB’s figure). You think to yourself 50 hrs is only 6 days riding-thats not much

2000 K in 50 hours would give an average speed of 40 KM/hr. I know that does not sound like much but try to average that speed in singles. If you ride like me you will be getting personal with the flora. The pony x tracks have a un policed rule that the average speed in the races be about 50 km/hr. Although mostly it would be a lot quicker especially for the A grade riders. If a bike only did a race like The Fink I would suspect it would be way over 100. But for the riding we do on average including idling time, sweeping duties I bet the average would be closer 30 ???? If it has been only used mostly for racing and training the averages will be much higher. Hatto’s figure of 80kph would in my opinion be closer to a race/ train bike with the occasional trail ride thrown in. Just my 2 cents.

Exactly, thats what SB’s figure suggests, I recon my average is about 20-25kms ( I am am slow).

Thanks hatto I missed SB’s average that he had in his post. Is the average OZ safari only 80kph. I know that is still quick but I thought it had the fastest average speed of a race of its type and length ??? I thought it would be over 100?? The race I am comparing to is obviously the Dakar. If its only 80 I had better go and show those Smith brothers how it’s done. :silly:

I have no idea, I was just using SB’s figure as example ;)

My bike has done 2336 kms, 64.9 hrs and its only 6 months old

Just get a 390 Berg Nick don’t worry about dealer support, since I got my bike I only went back once for the 3 hr service to keep the warranty in check. After that I do my own service and get parts from a little bike mechanic that is 2 mins down the road or order online.

You should get a 390 as well LC as your average speed is too high at 36k no wonder I cant keep up with you!
