I have had no bottom end power for awhile now on my RMX which seems to be very wrong fro mall the reviews I have read so far so the other day I took the engine put to find that the power valve had been welded fully open, and the cover packed with selastic and put back on, rendering the power valve useless and the bottom end power and torque non existent. To my surprise tho the bike still ran ok
It seems like it has been broken at some stage then dogily put together (still seemed pretty smart how it was done tho).
This seems to be a common problem with the powervalve, is there anything to make it more reliable?Does anyone know where I can get a power valve for a 99RMX 250 without it costing an arm and leg?
I will try to put some pics up but don’t have the engine at my place
January 3, 2012 at 9:53 pm #214009Demasi, I think the key to power valve reliability is to pull it down regularity, clean of spooge off and inspect making sure it is working freely.
As for a cheap replacement if you are planning on keeping the bike long term go with new if you can afford it. Could save future headaches.
January 3, 2012 at 10:10 pm #214016I agee with scotty the trick to keeping ya power valve working properly is to kleen it and maintain I had the same problem with my wr200,a mate had the rmx250 and the power valve will cost an arm and a leg

yep sorry mate its all bad news. over $250 for a new genuine power valve which you have to get from an Aussie dealer as the 98 – 2001 RMX’s are Aussie only spec dont waste your time or money trying to get US RMX or RM power valve parts as they dont fit!

January 4, 2012 at 3:48 pm #214010Thanks for the link its very useful. I guess I don’t have a choice with the cost of the parts. Ill also have a look at the valve every 40hours or so to see how its going and to clean it. More maintenance to add to the list, but I guess it will save money in the long run and I won’t have to worry about it blowing up
January 4, 2012 at 5:10 pm #214011I haven’t had my RMX that long and I have inspected and cleaned the power valve. When cleaned up there was no signs on any wear and with regular maintenance I think it should be reliable.
That said I have also thought about possible alternatives. From what I know (some say that’s not much) the Oz RMX motor is based on the earlier RM/RMX motor. The only real difference seams to be the power valve, with the Oz/Jap spec RMX having a 3 piece blade style power valve and the RM and US spec RMX having two round style valves.
It would appear the 94/95 RM250 barrel would bolt up to the RMX bottom end. They use the same base gasket, same crank and rod assemble and same piston. It seems even the actuator rod for the power valve has the same part number.
What I’m thinking is if the OZ blade style power valve is problematic it may be possible to convert it to the round style by replacing the barrel with one of an 94/95RM250 or earlier US spec RMX.
Oz/Jap spec RMX top end
94/95 RM250 top end
Blade style power valve
Round RM style power valve
I was only at a bike wrecker earlier this week and he had a bucket full of this round style valve but no blade style ones.
Of course this is all only theory but at first glance looks like a goer. If all else fail may be easier to just shoehorn in a complete RM250 motor, giddy upJanuary 4, 2012 at 5:19 pm #214040That’s awesome information Scotty for users Scotty

January 5, 2012 at 4:15 pm #214012Thanks Scotty Ill have a look at it and see whats possible, I think that as you said with maintenance it will be fine and reliable with regular services
January 5, 2012 at 9:52 pm #214117Wouldn’t be too hasty to swap to the RM system. Had one (Rm125) years ago, the stem of the power valve (round RM type) broke and the valve lunched itself, the piston and bore as it slid down into the cylinder! Not saying the RMX system is better, just sayin’ isall, just sayin,’!
