G’day.
I am heading out this year, with my Father as support crew, to have a crack at Finke and am looking for someone to share the fuel costs.
I will have room for one bike and rider from Goondiwindi Qld, we are going out through Roma, Longreach ect.. I will be staying with relatives so accommodation is free. All I want is to halve the fuel cost which I estimate to be about $1,300 in total. So around $650, if my calculations are correct. Food will not be included. Traveling to and from Alice will be roadside swag accommodation so it will be a million star luxury.
I am entering in the over 35’s class. We will be doing some pre-running the week before and my father will meet us at Finke to cart camping gear and spares to service the bikes during the race.If all goes to plan I will be leaving Goondiwindi on Wednesday 30th May and returning Friday 15th June (give or take a day or two)
I plan to be there the weekend before for the organized pre-run and will head back home on Tues or Wednesday (depending on how big the after party gets).Entries open on 30th January.
So if you’re not an axe murderer and are just crazy enough to do battle with the desert, then contact me.
P.S. If you are annoying or just plain weird……….you will be left in the desert.
Cheers.

I will get some pics up of the bike rebuild in the next few days.
April 20, 2012 at 12:22 pm #214036Time to make the bike a bit more bullet proof.
The suspension is currently in Mildura getting tweaked by Warren Smart.
Can see I had a leaking Exhaust valve. I fixed that with a bit of a rub with grinding paste.
The piston and rings are being replaced.
Motors Out.
The bore is all good.
New fiction and pressure plates for the clutch.
Replacing the crank assembly, main bearings and all the bearings in the gearbox.
Organised Chaos!!
April 20, 2012 at 10:27 pm #220118Hi Gibbit,
Just a word of caution. I noticed that you said one of the exhaust valves was leaking and you sealed it by using a bit of grinding paste. As I am a race engine builder with many years of experience with late model Yamaha cylinder heads using titanium valves. Assuming you are using the standard titanium valves they should never be lapped in using grinding paste as this wears through the hardened coating on the valve sealing face and causes premature inevitable loss of valve clearance. The best solution is to replace the valves with brand new ones and check for no valve seat wear.
Just some advice for you, however the choice is yours. Good luck with the rebuild.Cheers,
LeftyApril 20, 2012 at 10:38 pm #220138Wow. I tip my fox hat to you Gibbit for doing the rebuild yourself. Good Luck in the Finke.

LeftyThanks for the advice mate. I have heard that before. I checked the valve was leaking by pouring a bit of petrol in there to confirm the leak. The valves where only about 15 hours old so I pulled that valve out and just gave it a bit of a 15 second rub with some paste by hand. That is all. I put it back in and checked it with petrol again and it sealed.
Do you think I may have done damage to the valves doing such a small amount of grinding?
I guess I wil find out next time I check my valve clearances.

Hey Gibbit,
Hard to tell mate to be honest as the coating is half a micron thick but it is a good chance of damage.
Put it this way if it were me and I was going to the trouble of a full rebuild before the Finke I would be putting a full set of valves in it. I would be pretty pissed off with myself if I rode the first leg to Finke and then the f#$*er won’t start for the return leg! Or worse drop a valve! It looks like you are going the whole hog on the rebuild……
Just putting it out there for consideration, but it’s up to you.
I hopre this advice helps and good luck with it all mate.Cheers,
LeftyApril 21, 2012 at 1:08 am #220144Thanks mate. I will see how it goes before I head out there. If the clearences close up over the first few hours I will look at getting the head done. I intend on putting a few hours on it between now and finke.
April 21, 2012 at 1:27 am #220148Yeah, no worries mate. Good luck with it. If you need to get the head done let me know as there is only one place to get it done properly.
Cheers,
