    YOU may have allready read this on ADV in Thumpers under 2008 Tenere, Message 3577,a dutch fellow say’s to fix the cush drive rubber ware, they are adding a extra bearing to the inner hub, Could this be a fix then. CHOOT :unsure: :unsure:

    Haven’t seen that Choot it would give more support reduce the twist but how it stops the rubbers wearing?
    I will read it cheers for the heads up

    “After lurking for a long time finally a first post here from me
    About the defective bearing; I have modified the cush drive unit by making the chamber where the bearing fits in 15 mm. deeper allowing to fit a second bearing next to the original one. In this case you also have to change the little spacer making it fit in 2 bearings instead of one.
    The result of 2 bearings is that the cush drive unit is far more stable, with as best result no more cush drive destruction and much longer chain life.

    My take on that is someone failed a Cush drive bearing And they have fitted two bearings side by side. Won’t change the rubber wear but may improve the bearing life. I fit new wheel bearings and Cush drive bearings normally every 6 to 8 thousand kilometers they are far from worn but they have no chance of failing on the track that way

    After reading some posts and TB’s videos, I figured I should replace my cush drive rubbers. All tyre changes have been done by the local bike shop so I have never had reason to inspect them, assuming that they would tell me if they were worn (last tyres TKC80’s only lasted 2,500k) so in preparation for a big ride, I did the E09 change in the shed.

    Anyway, long story short, the little rubber connectors on the rubbers were worn off and there was evidence of some rubbers cocking in the drive, wearing irregularly – not bad really after nearly 17,000km (yeah I know – I should be strung up…). So, called local Yamaha dealer today, the rubbers are $24 each. That the right price or should I look elsewhere for the next set?

    No thats the local over inflated Yamaha touch up price. Try here I think its 30 bucks a complete set. Buy 4 or 5 sets and make it worth the postage. I always try and buy local but we dont have an Old Bull Yamaha dealer and Yamaha Australia are too dear

    Thanks TB… Yamaha needed payment to order… nice ploy that, so $96 for the set for me (this time)… At lease they will be in tomorrow.

    Even at $96 it’s still only 96/17000 = half a cent per km. Not bad when you look at that way. Mind you I’m not saying it’s alright for Yamaha to stitch everyone up either. If there’s a huge price difference go the cheapest I say.

    Agreed, happy to replace them, just more $ than I expected.

    On the flip side, every time I fill up with petrol, I wasn’t thinking “add $2 for cush drive wear”… I know the same can be said for servicing , tyres, rego, insurance etc… just one of those unexpected costs…

    Well got to learn on the weekend what a rear Cush Drive is plus the role the cush bearings and rubbers play. I was out on the XR400 with some ORE riders and felt some vibration in the rear. Upon investigations we found the cush drive bearing was tiny bit sloopy and the rubbers looked compressed. Got some tuition on what to look for and after some bush mechanics with some electrical tape we sorted it out so I could enjoy the rest of the day and more importantly get home.

    So tonight I did some searching on YouTube to understand it more and funnily enough I found 3 video’s on Tenere cush drive rubber. I recognised the voice and the tongs and sure enough it was TB.

    Thanks TB for explaining it all for me….. I now know how to determine if you have a cush drive rubber problem and how to fix it.

    I’m off to locate a new set of rubbers and replace the cush bearing. The wheel bearings were replaced not so long ago…..

    :laugh: Kat you are welcome, and always welcome here for any hands on learning ;) If you look in the DIY forum here you will find that and more do it yourself videos etc, look at OBT first (if it isnt there let me know and I maybe able to do one time permitting). When ever you replace the wheel bearings do the cush drive bearing. I will also be doing a demo of my new bearing removal tool soon wait to you see that :woohoo:
