My mate and I both have DR650’s with Staintne exhausts.
Both bikes run fine but backfire quite a bit when you back off makeing me think they are running rich.
His uses a fair bit more fuel than mine.
His was jetted from new at Springwood Suzuki by previous owner. (2008 Model wit 5 odd thousand K’s)
Mine has Procycle jet kit with opened up airbox.(2007 with 6 odd thousand K’s)

Question is does any body know of a mechanic around the Coffs area that is pretty competent with jetting that we could take our bike to.

We are heading of in early March for a two week ride to Flinders ranges and would like to get both bikes running as fuel efficient as possible before we go.

Even if someone knows of a DR650 GURU nearby that could be an excuse for a couple of days riding.(No problem with that)

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi Maso,

Before you spend your hard earned cash, check that the Staintune is sealed properly to the header pipe. As air entering this joint as you back off can cause the back firing that you are hearing.

    Cheers,

Thanks Lefty I will check that out this arvo.

I would still like to find someone to check that they are both jetted properly.

Dr 650 with aftermarket pipe will pop on decel as it will run lean on deceleration, you can fix this if you ritchen it up but this will effect your fuel economy. I have aftermarket pipe fitted with JD jetting kit and airbox opened have learnt to live with the pop. :)
Mine still gives good fuel economy, if your friends is burning more it could be jetting or circlip position. There is some good advice on jetting the DR on advrider if you do a search on there site. B)

There are allot of reports of huge variance in fuel economy from one bike to the next by up to 20 miles/gallon on The ADV forum but you probably already know that. Have you pulled the plug after a bit of a ride to see how it is looking?

    Thanks fellas

I can put up with the popping on decel as my fuel economy is still pretty good.

Guess we will have to pull his carby and see what jetting is in his and maybe make it same as mine to see if that makes a difference.

I do know his plug was very black when we installed his vapor temp sensor.

Looks like I get the spanners out this week end.
