Just wondering if you blokes follow the leaders line….
Or do we pick our own line on the trail.
I find it easy to follow the leader…Till he makes a mistake.   .
What do you think.February 18, 2012 at 11:32 pm #216477For me it depends on who I am riding with, how close I am, if I am following or waiting / trying to pass and how much shit is coming out of the bike in front  . If its someone on it, I will try and stay out of their line as much as I can so I dont get roosted. If its someone I ride with heaps and trust them yeah I will use their line.
Its an interesting question SpudTB
February 18, 2012 at 11:51 pm #216484After our all day ride yesterday Spud I know what I do in areas I don’t know , follow the leaders line
some of those rutted down hills leading into the bogs I trusted your line 100% , I did however pick a tighter line in the corners when I was following Phil in the really tight singles , this may have been because the 250 turned in easier. When I ride on trails I know well I try and look past the lead rider to look for new obstacles on the trail and take my usual line .
Adventure riding I just try and get the big basterd up any hard stuff best I can

Thats some funny shit right there…..
I find that you should never just be watching the bike in front of you and there line you should be looking much further ahead to plan your line and go from there
IMO

February 19, 2012 at 8:18 pm #216478I ride alone a huge amount so don’t have this problem, although on the rare occasions that I do ride with someone I am usually that far behind that they take sympathy and wait …………………… and wait ………………………… and wait until I catch up.

February 19, 2012 at 8:32 pm #216479If I’m not folowing someone with local knolage,,it’s always the line of least resistance, regardles where the other guyes are going,or at least what looks like the least resistance. But if I’m riding my aria n tracks that I know I’l often take the hard line just for the chalange or fun of it.Sometimes dont make it eather
Cheers teza.February 19, 2012 at 9:30 pm #216480There are generally quite a few different lines involved when i ride
The one my mind wants to take
The one my bike takes
The one my body takes rumbling and rolling through the bushesThe one i should have taken
I tend to perform best when i take my own line which often tends to cross the track from side to side quite frequently
I hate rutsFebruary 19, 2012 at 9:55 pm #216608Most riders I follow tend to take the smoother line and I follow but sometimes I don’t agree with the bloke in fronts choice and go my own way. If it is a slower rider in front that I want to go past I will take the harder line cause that’s usually the only one available
February 21, 2012 at 4:14 pm #216614I usually end up taking the line less travelled because I ride too close behind people and its hard to follow their line without looking down at the ground, just a half metre to either side and you can see where you are going and stay out of the roost.
February 21, 2012 at 5:23 pm #216481I like to sit back a bit and take the smoothest line I can see. Sometimes that’s the leads line and sometimes it’s not. Just depends on the terrain and my approach to the tricky stuff.
February 21, 2012 at 5:46 pm #216482Yeh agree with TB, good ask Spud!
The only time you should follow the rider in fronts line is in long grass where you can’t see the sh!t that you don’t want to hit
The rest of the time you should pick your own line in practice for when you are out in front … should that ever happen!!
When I’m leading (I’ve been riding 25 years and I can remember once … I think .. when I was in the leed) and someones hanging off my ar$e close enough for me to hear them I am usually way to tempted to lead them into the uggliest trail trash I can spot just to stop them annoying me…. but thats just me :woohoo:
February 21, 2012 at 6:06 pm #216732Usually follow the guy in front as single tracks only have one line.
Hills = I end up with my own line.
Hard Hills = watch the local pros line/ cleanest/ grippiest.
Fire trail = the most fun line.
Leading = go as fast as I can see safely ahead on any line but stay left on fire trails and crests.
February 21, 2012 at 7:51 pm #216734i just go where the bike takes me most of the time and just hang on. on single track if someone is in front i use them for line selection but don t neccersaraly use there line often use them to find a better line
