Well,
I can`t claim the rights to this mod, as Deano is the mastermind behind it really
I had been toying with the idea of a home made rack for a while to matchup with the Touratech Pannier frames. Never really got around to giving it a shot, till Deano made it known that he had designed one for his well setup 690 ,,,
SO, I was quick to jump on the wagon and ask for a copy :laugh:Picked it up last night and completed the cutting, drilling and slots today .
It gives us a solid platform for securing extra gear or even bolt on an extra fuel can such as the Rotaopax (with room to access the rear tank filler) And easily removable if only wanting to carry side panniers or even just the rear rack on its own
It just adds to the versatility of our bikes nowGreat job Deano
Those beers will be coming your way !!!
Pics coming
Cheers
February 29, 2012 at 4:27 pm #217353Pics here finally
There are some fine tuning things I may do as well (after my first test ride)I forgot to mention that I think MickP had some presence in spurring Deano on to make one , especially in regards to the brace down to the pannier frame
Cheers Boys, Nice job I reckon
February 29, 2012 at 5:05 pm #217354Looks pretty good Eages
When that fully sic Barrett pipe heats it up, you will be able to cook your bacon and eggs on it :woohoo:
Bol :woohoo:
February 29, 2012 at 5:14 pm #217355:laugh:
That`s the beauty of the Barrett s opposed to the standard 690 pipe
The Barrett stays relativelt cool, so much that you can put your hand on it soon after shutting down the donk,,, The standard pipe will melt anything within a metre  No shit, they call them “THERMONUCLEAR DEVICE ” :SI have a small heat sheild over the top of the pipe anyway Boll (had it there previously to protect luggage straps & the like)
Does that explain it ??? You Cheeky Bugger
Now piss off & build your CRF ADVer
February 29, 2012 at 5:56 pm #217359Lucky your ADV rides only go for ten minutes and you ride like a girl or that plate would get hot :pinch:  I reckon I should get a ride of it loaded, bet you a lottery ticket I can get the plate hot
Looks the goods otherwise Eags, nice work as well Deano. Is it a copy of a brand name one cause it looks familiar

You can Bite Me
The Wauchope/Nundle ride was longer than 10 mins, you ran it actually
The ride like a girl bit ,,,,, well,,,, so what , I enjoy taking in the scenery :whistle:Not a copy as far as I know, B&B did a custom for MickP but the other B&B rack is totally different and costs close to $200, but then again there are some other brands out there ……
I will soldier on regardless and test it out at my pace :woohoo:
February 29, 2012 at 6:38 pm #217363What I know about carry racks could be written on a the back of a postage stamp in large writing so take what I say with a grain of salt. To me having the screw head proud of the plate looks like you are asking to have the base ripped out of any bags tied to the plate. The plate also looks reasonably thin and when a bag overhangs the side of the plate will the vibration/movement result in the plate eventually cutting/sawing through the bag material. I’m guessing this has all been thought of before and it’s fine but just thinking out loud.
I’m guessing the slots are for straps to go through. As I said I don’t have much need for any of this on the 300 so it’s all new to me.
I’m not trying to be a party pooper and the workmanship certainly looks good but the engineer in me had to ask. If you know any engineers you’ll understand that we are details people.
February 29, 2012 at 7:18 pm #217356Yeah Roy,
All those issues are understood for sure, and actaully some were the reason I hadn`t bought one or made it earlier
B&B now have a 20mm tube welded around the entire edge of their rack to provide a nice round edge as well stiffening the plate.Slots , yep they are for straps and they aer cheap enough to replace if they wear on a long trip (I carry spares anyway)
I will be only normally be carying my tent and camp chair etc on mine, I just needed quicker access to the filler cap.
Nothing will really be hanging over the sides of the plate to rub, nor will it be on the front part where the bolt heads areI do have countersunk screws but chose not to use them at this stage
I am tossing up whether to cut some more slots or holes in the lage portion of the plate or drill some large holes etc, but will wait till I decide on a Rotopax fuel cell or not
Cheers
February 29, 2012 at 7:24 pm #217367i like it Eages, it should make it easier for me to pick you out when you are riding past
So when are you Testing it out ?February 29, 2012 at 10:08 pm #217368Nice one Eagle and Deano , that looks great and is a similar size to my Hepco plate on the Tenere. TB refers to it as the heli pad and also says I ride like a girl !!!
but I can ride like a girl 24 hours a day with minimal stops
and that’s what matters !!!!
February 29, 2012 at 10:22 pm #217386Well done Eags. You got that finished quick smart.
The raised head bolts that Bundyroy picked up are not an issue for me and probably for Eags because it’s a right pain in the arse having bags over the fuel cap so the only thing mounted to the top rack will be further back on the flat area.
Also the plate is 3mm ally so i don’t think it will cause too much damage to the bags but only time will tell.
Cheers
March 1, 2012 at 10:38 am #217389I didn’t realise that was the fuel cap behind the seat. Here I was thinking “these boys sure like their bike to look pretty, they won’t even cover up one little plastic badge to get more luggage space”. I wasn’t game to say it though without knowing someone well enough (ie having met them) to give them shit. Lucky politeness won in this case or I would have had a little egg on my face.

That didn`t last long at all ,,,,Gave it some thought during the day at work, came home, had another look and decided to hack some more off 😆
My AndyStrapz Bags have a good sizes strap that crosses over the fuelcap area to help hold them on the bike, so off came some of the fat to minimise rubbing on the strap (some more pinchweld may be used there too
It also gives me more access to the frame supports to attach straps when securing gear…..Also cut couple of more slots in the back part of the plate to save an ounce or two , It is still a work in progress so more may be cut or just make them a little longer
It is still surprisingly strong and I reckon I could stand on top of it no probs …..
Ya just can`t beat some quiet ShedTime on a rainy arvo :woohoo:March 1, 2012 at 8:07 pm #217369pete the wulf wrote:i like it Eages, it should make it easier for me to pick you out when you are riding past
