A timely reminder
This is a bit embarrassing for me to bring this topic up but I felt it is something that needs to be given a great deal of consideration, by all people over 40 considering recent developments in my life.
On the way home from the Scrapheap ride at Easter, I started to feel “not right”, a feeling that I hadn’t felt before. It has been no secret to some of the guys here, that I have been all but living in antacid tablets for quite some time, as heartburn was giving me hell.
Anyhow, I put up with the feeling for a few more weeks before I saw a doctor about it.He diagnosed that I had a complaint called GORD that required me to take some tablets that fixed the problem straight away. Something I should have done years ago. At the same time he referred me to a specialist, so he could put one of those cameras down my neck and into my guts for a look see.
When I went to see him, he said “OK I’ll have a look but I am going to have a look up your bum as well”. I was a bit dubious about that, as I am a bit “funny” about that sort of stuff. (definately one way traffic, up there).
To cut a long story short, I went into hospital for them to have a look and as it turns out, things aren’t to bad in my guts, however what they found in my bowels was of great concern and they removed two separate growths that were with in weeks of turning into Bowel Cancer.
There was no indication that there was something wrong ”down there” and that I was only a matter of weeks from being in real trouble.
I was seriously surprised!! I commented to the doctor that I had no real indication that I had problems “down there” and he said that is why bowel cancer is called the “Silent Killer”
It is National Bowel screening month at the moment, Rotary are selling the screening kits at the moment for a small fee, having just dodged a bullet, I am urging you guys that are over 40 to consider doing the scan.

Hope you didn’t wake up and say something tastes like shit only to find out they did the scans in the wrong order. They do knock you out for the reverse angle shots don’t they.

WE joked about that very thing Roy. They do knock you out for both ends. It isn’t that bad to be honest, ( No stupid comments, please), surprisingly you don’t feel a thing.

May 29, 2012 at 12:04 am #222908Hey Mick,
Glad to here that all is well and it is all sorted. The problem is that many of us don’t like doctors or going to see about something like that as we all think (Me included) that it will not happen to me. As I am now over 40 and have never had any of the checks done I am now seriously thinking about going fo the FULL check up and maybe TUNE UP if required.
Thanks for the reminder mate. I will look into this next week.Cheers Lefty

…spud…Yeah, according to the doctor all is good now and I am actually feeling a lot better within myself. I am so glad I went to the doctor, as I normally have to be really crook before I would go and see a doctor normally.
May 29, 2012 at 12:33 am #222911Sounds like you were very lucky mate , I always said I’d get a full check at 40 , that was nearly a year ago and I haven’t been yet. Full of excuses why not to do it , might be time to go after the birthday ride , maybe it would be a good time for more old bulls to get checked out

May 29, 2012 at 12:34 am #222912These days it is generally just a blood test to start with to check your PSA levels, if they are a bit high the camera comes out (or more to the point goes in :S ).
I had mine blood test just recently which revealed a few other problems but nothing a change of diet and some excercise wont fix.
As for the heart burn, I have been on tablets for them for about 4 years now and had the camera down the throat twice. Last time I went in the nurse asked me to take the underpants off, I had to tell her she needed her compass adjusted
Very pleased to hear a positive outcome for you Mick
May 29, 2012 at 12:45 am #222925Bloody hell mate  go and buy ya self a lottery ticket. fantastic that you got to it before it reared its insidious head. One thing with my job they are “anal” with the check ups and medicals especially for when you tick off the 40th birthday.
Good Job Mick catch up with you soon.

I still owe you $60…..
May 29, 2012 at 1:35 am #222930Good to hear your OK, a couple of my mates both in their early 40’s had the same work done. This isn’t an old man issue.
One mate had a crap in the bush after a deer hunt and noticed a big chunk of blood….he’s not been real lucky, had 4 operations so far and still no good
Probably a great reminder for us all to get checked out.
