I have heard lots of different theories on this and as I am about to start running in my new CRF250x I thought I would ask the question.

When I got my bike the mechanic told me just to go on a normal ride in the bush using pretty much the full rev range without revving the crap out of it. Constant speed on the road doesn’t do them any good.

I did this for about 3 hrs, took it back for its first service so as not to void the warranty, then gave it a flogging on the next ride.

This method has worked for me twice now with no problems, but I’m sure there are other schools of thought on the subject.

    Good subject ..

I’m in the same boat next week when my shiny new two-stroker arrives. I was trying to remember what “running it in” actually meant. From memory it was a pretty normal ride, without high rev’s, anything from 1 to 5 hours .

Then, most importantly was a first service, change of oil, tighten and check all screws nuts n bolts, chain tension etc.

That was it as far as run-in … then it’s out for a full-on ride from there! Flat out if you want!!

Most probably will never keep their bike long enough to make a difference. Theres probably few old bulls that ever valve bounce their rides. My only advise is ride it smooth as everyone should. When i say smooth i mean fast. ;)

And should you change the oil after the first two rides?

    STM

change it after the first one

and if enthusiastic after every ride for a couple (50-100km)

oil is cheap , motors are not

I ran in my gasser relatively hard and changed the oil after the 1st tank. I will drop the oil again after 500k’s but its 2t so yours would be different but i would recommend the 1st tank a not so easy on the throttle one so the rings bed in straight away. There are heaps of theorys so thats why i went with the one closest to just riding normally.

in the first half hour don t over rev the motor or labour it .in the midrange try to load the motor up(full throttle) to push the rings into the bore so it does not glaze up and the rings get a good seel.than just ride it .thats how my mechanic told me to run my boat in and i do bikes ?reckon TB would be the best one to ask.so in otherwords just flog it through singletrack

I’d join in with the “dont lug it and dont over rev it for the first tank theory”

Thats what i’v done and changed the oil after the first ride ;)

the other thing i did which i would’nt reccomend is going over the bars in a monster crash  which saw the bike with big gouges in front, rear and side plastics :( :( :(

Have fun and enjoy it mate B)

Ride it pinned Scotty, then trow it down the widow maker, that should do it

Just ride the bloody thing, just like your are going to ride it and all should be good I think. Oil change after the first ride, or couple of hours, what ever comes first.

Just don’t rev the shyte out of it or lugg it, seems to be a popular run in method, going on all the replies.
