Seeing as there is a few Mac users here and that more people are buying camera’s and editing video’s I thought this would be a helpful topic.

As a noob to iMac’s and iMovie I found it pretty easy to use. One thing I’d like to know though is if it’s possibles to get additional themes and transitions in iMovie?

Also, I have heaps of pictures saved on the HD but not in iPhoto, how do I import them into iMovie, drag and drop doesn’t work and the ‘insert a picture’ section only recognises iPhoto?

Any other helpful hints and tips to get me started in the porn, I mean, film business

I have a question. Anyone using iMovie 11? I’m currently still running iMovie 09 and looked at updating, only cost $15 so cheap at twice the price but reading some reviews it seems some people are having trouble with iMovie 11 crashing. Whats everybody running and have you had any issues?

PS, I am running OS X Mountain Lion.

I’m running the latest version. It has actually crashed once too. That might not sound like a lot but I’ve only been using it for around 1.5 hours total.

Other than that it seems fine. I’m running the latest Mountain Lion too.

I heard there are a few glitches with the new Mountain Lion but knowing apple they will sort that quickly. I have the latest updates for Lion OS and I have never dropped a frame let alone crash.
If you don’t want to import from iPhoto just create a temp file on your desktop and you can drag into the timeline straight from there. same goes for screenshots, music etc.

Okay, I’ll give that a go, cheers. Still a bit gay you can’t drag a file in from anywhere on your hard drive

When you say drag it over are you trying to drop it straight to the timeline or into the event library?

Tried both, neither seemed to work, it just whafted back to whence it came :D I concluded I would have to add all my pictures to iPhoto in order to make the best use of it, it’s just something I didn’t want to do, I don’t really like iPhoto to store and organise my files.

The Mac is a good bit of kit but it has a few things like this that annoy me!

Understand your frustration mate…. To get the most of the Apple experience and ease of use of their applications you will need to follow their way unfortunately…

I use iPhoto only to integrate the other apps together… I still manually manage my photo files.. When importing into iPhoto just tell iPhoto to suck in a copy of the file into its database. Then any modifications or what not done to the photo in iPhoto will not effect your manually manage file.

    Hope that helps….

re; Other prefab templates for iMovie… Apparently not however there seems to be a way to make your own? Remember iMovie is a mum and dad ease of use type app… If you want a hardcore Video editing solution Apples Final Cut Pro is the way to go…

  Very good STM!!!! I never thought about trying to drop it right into the project space… Duh  The Event Library will only deal with and talk to the integrated apps as well as its own library of videos… Yeah!!! 😆

It is good too in that it only takes a copy and keeps the root file as it was so if you then manipulate in your timeline you have not effected the original.

Cheers for that Scott, it’s a way round to achieving what I want. I was trying to drag directly from Finder and it wasn’t having a bar of it!

I’ll watch that vid again next time I try and see if I can replicate your moves!

I tried directly from finder last night moto and as long as you drag it directly into the project section it works fine.. It is just when trying to drag it into the event library that I had the same outcome as you….

I personally still like to bring the photos into iPhoto and archive the originals as I have 8 years of digital photos of me daughter plus 2 of the boy and the last 10 years of traveling photos…. I think I’m up to around 3 grand… Makes it easier to browse and categorize using iPhoto…………

For all you mac users another useful app for document management is http://www.icyblaze.com/idocument/
