The XR600 had a shock service recently but still doesn’t have enough compression dampening. I have it adjusted as firm as it will go but need a bit more for the way I ride.
Any reason why i cant just change from the 7wt oil to something heavier.
How much thicker would I need to go so what I currently have on maximum setting is around halfway. 15wt 20wt ??
And no I don’t want to spend money on a re-valve. Changing oil viscosity is the norm for forks so it should be a viable option for the shock as well.

    Hi Wayne,
the 600 shock usually has too much compression dampening, did we do the service? if we did bring the shock back and i’ll pull it down again, FOC.

Thanks mate. You have done the service previously but not last time. Starting to think the shock spring may be too soft and I am relying too much on the dampening to over come this.

Well, finally found the time to strip clean and change the oil in the shock. Chose 15W oil.(standard is 7W) Wow what a difference. Now both ends of the bike feel similar over rough terrain where before the rear end even with the compression dampening set to maximum was too soft.
Rebound dampening was set to 75% hard now set to 10%
Compression dampening was 100% hard now set to 50%
    Unloaded sag 2 cm
    Loaded sag 9.5 cm
Shock charged to 180psi of Argon. My choice of a dry inert gas.

    Hi Nik,
Had no problems with the servicing done previously when i had the piston ring, oil shaft seal, bump stop, rebound rubber, bladder and various o rings replaced. Could tell there was an improvement, just not firm enough to suit my riding style. Still think a harder spring would have been another option even though the sag settings say maybe not.
The piston has less friction through the mid section of the stroke compared to either end so there is some wear within the shock body.

This time I done the servicing myself.
