Ok so looks like I need to new sprockets and chain for the KTM 350EXC. So basic questions ….

    > best place to buy them from?
    > how many hours can you expect to get from them?

Wear depends on a few things like type of riding (sand and mud can cause quicker wear), how hard you ride, quality of lubricant, chains and sprockets.

So with that in mind I don’t think you can really nominate a number of hours or kms. You really need to visually check the sprocket teeth for signs of wear and the chain for stiff links or excessively loose links.

As for where to get them, Sutto’s give old bull discounts, good service and are a KTM dealer.

    Hey Rach
My 500 goes through those bits every 2500kms
I should think you’d get a few more kms out of your 350

I go with steel sprockets and a RK X-ring chain
    Costs about $250
Don’t forget to use loctite on the sprocket bolts
    Cheers

how many kms have you gotten out of this set?

Have you been cleaning and lubing your chain after every ride?

I don’t really take any notice of how many km or how I get out of a set, I just have a look at them every so often and if I they look a bit tired I replace them. I clean and lube the chain after almost every ride. If I am riding a couple of days in a row then I might spray some lube on it before the second day if I think of it.

    Who said yours need replacing?

I got my last chain and sprockets from Bling King Products, poofy name but they have some good stuff cheap. Their store is down for maintenance but everything is listed on ebay.

    Check them out http://www.blingkingproducts.com.au/

Murph is on the money Rach, steel sprockets and RK 520 X Ring chain.

Steel sprockets will last much longer than alloy.

Call Suttos, they have great deals on sprocket and chain combos.

    Rach,

I’ve had good wear from my chains etc on the 350.

I change the front sprocket as soon as it starts to wear that way I use two front sprockets to a chain and maybe two chains to a rear sprocket (rear sprocket depends on how much mud).

Front sprocket are cheaper than chains and rear sprockets and worn front sprockets cause increased stress in your chain helping it to wear faster.

I use steel fronts (don’t even know if they make alloy fronts) and used steel and alloy rears and had good wear from both types (surprisingly)

I use x ring chains as they are very resistant to stretching (caused by wear)

    Adam.

My only comment is to buy genuine KTM front, 14 wears better than 13. The rest is up to personal preference.

    Wise words/question Jeffo!!

I don’t particularly care about the amount of KM, because I can get up to 10K worth of km before I need to change them, BUT i am on a different beast (aka adventure bike) that doesn’t have the on the ground power you crazing trail riders have. :woohoo:

However for my two bobbs worth I also recommend steel sprockets and an o’ring chain. I got my chain through Torpedo 7. It’s a DID chain.

I also don’t really subscribe to determining chain/sproket wear through a cleaning regime. I pretty much only lubricate the chain after a wash of the bike……….which admittedly could be several rides apart   This isn’t because I don’t think it might need it, I just forget or run outta time……more riding….less cleaning!! Again I don’t put my bikes through the same amount of sand or mud.

Probably all wrong and bad advise or suggestions, but it is what it is and it hasn’t hurt me yet. :P B)

Having seen the sort of crap that Rach rides through she probably has enough mud stuck in her chain to fill a flower pot   .

Plus she rides fast and hard and does 100km of trail every weekend. Very jealous by the way Rach.

Are you going to change them yourself Rach?? Why not take it to your local bike shop and get their opinion?

As for the cleaning regime ….I am one of those people that shine, polish (silicon spray), lube and go over the whole bike after EVERY ride. It may be a dirt bike but it doesn’t have to be a dirty bike ;)

Go to Sutto’s Rach. No question there ;)

Thanks for the input guys, I took the bike to the shop for the stuff i cant do and they mentioned that it was time for new sprockets and chain. I knew it was coming as i could see the front sprocket was wearing but i reckon there are a few more rides left in it yet.

    > I clean, lube blah blah after every ride
    > Some stuff i wont attempt to do yet maintenance wise … eg my front fork seal had a BIG leak … so even if i cleaned it out properly I wouldnt have felt confident that there was enough oil still in there and I am not keen to attempt changing them yet
    > sprockets and chain i reckon i will have a crack at

I am trying to do more of the maintenance stuff myself (saves $$$$)… i dont feel that confident with just yet  .. but then I doing heaps more on it now then when i first started so i guess it is just a matter of time. Pick the bike back up tomorrow but i think it only has about 1,500km on it but I have been riding in a heap of sand and mud

I will be in touch with Sutto’s :)

See not knowing any better I would have automatically just replaced the whole lot at once  thanks for the tip!

    Rach 1500kms is bugger all
If your sprocket teeth don’t look like fish hooks or if no teeth are broken, ya should be good.
    Cheers
