I use Motul air filter oil and no matter how much I squeeze out the excess after oiling I still end up with it running out of my air box drain and all over my swing arm and linkage. Its not cheap stuff and I’d rather not waste it. I’m not sure if its only my issue but here’s my solution.
I bought a 10ltr bucket with lid from the hardware store for $12 and poured in my 1ltr of Motul air filter oil.
I drilled a 10mm hole in the centre of the lid and got Spud to weld a 10mm threaded rod to a piece of 10mm bar to go through the lid.
Once the filter is oiled out of the bucket I squeeze out as much as possible then pass the t-bar through the filter.
Then put the rod through the lid and washer and screw down the nut.
Clip the lid onto the bucket to keep out dirt etc and leave to drain any excess oil back into the fresh oil.
I realize not all filters have a centre hole but I’m sure a similar method could be used on your filter with a few adjustments.

Note:
The air filter pictured hasn’t been fully oiled as I rarely use this filter.May 7, 2013 at 10:33 am #241379Hey Nick!

May 7, 2013 at 11:11 am #241380A plastic bag of some description and a cable tie , or tie wire
Loosely tie the wire or cable tie around the bottom of the bag or a quarter of the way up and this holds the filter up , hang it from something and all excess oil drains to the bottom
Or for the tightarses redirect excess oil from air box to your chain…………..

Tried this and ended up with a sticky bag with a bit of oil in the bottom , then what ? Tip it back in the bottle ? Try to re oil a filter in the bag that’s sticking together ?
I ended up in a mess with the bag which is why I went the bucket , seems ok so far but I can seem to get that filter oil stuck to everything so time will tell !!

i oil all my filters in plastic bags …. No need for gloves

May 7, 2013 at 10:07 pm #241405Why bother with all that fuss?
I just buy a can of filter spray oil and spray it on :silly: job done
I watched Moto oil his filter in a plastic bag before we went out the other day and it was a messy business
But I do agree with Lefty, you are a thinker Nick

Just another way of doing it. I usually do it this way and don’t waste any.
But your bucket set up is pretty trick.
May 8, 2013 at 1:36 am #241410Hey Nick. Don’t forget to wash the degreaser out fully.
If the degreaser or kerro or bundy or what ever you use to get the old filter oil off, isn’t washed off completely, it will make the new oil run off and not stick to the filter as well.May 8, 2013 at 3:18 am #241414gavb wrote:Hey Nick. Don’t forget to wash the degreaser out fully.

Once it’s dry it goes in my shed tumble drier to knock out any fine dust that may be left.
You get pretty fussy cleaning air filter when owning a crf250

Looks like you have got it sussed Nick.
I reckon when you put the filter in and the cage compresses the foam onto the lip of the airbox you will still get some seepage but not as much as before.
Lately I have been using Silkolene, it goes on very runny like water (which makes it easier to apply and less messy) and it dries nice and tacky like the Motul stuff.
