Advice please guys.
Neck Braces??After coathangering a branch over 4weeks ago which whipped my head back with such force that I passed out, I’m thinking I probably should get a neck brace. I’m still suffering from neck pain and headaches, and I’m having to wear my glasses a lot more than normal  Not to mention being a bit out of it for the past month or so.
ie. the fire incedent…and last night I found out that eggs left on the stove to boil will actually explode if the water runs dry.Has anyone else ever had concussion and how long did it take you to get over it?
(and No I haven’t been to the doctors. Going tomorrow)
May 28, 2013 at 4:17 am #242561I have a Leatt and love it. I feel naked if I’m not wearing now. I think it has reduced the risk of injuries over the years. Just remember they will not stop all neck injuries.
I still would recommend you get one.
Go to a big store that has all the brands and try them all on.
Have a read through these old threads. Snowy has done some great research on neck braces.

May 28, 2013 at 4:44 am #242583I have a Leatt Something, never ride without it unless it’s putting around the farm, I have been hooked by branches with it a couple of times the only negative. It’s a small price to pay to save your neck literally. TB has just bought the kids some EVS braces I think.
Cheers
Chris.May 28, 2013 at 5:06 am #242584No Deejay has an EVS that I believe saves his neck when he got knocked out.
The kids ones are Omega braces – http://www.omegabrace.com/
They seem really good and I am getting one for myself and they seem to sit lower than a Leatt ( good thing when you don’t have a neck  ) but can be adjusted up as well for longer necks. I also like the wider straps across the shouldersLike Mal said try them all before you buy one

May 28, 2013 at 5:18 am #242562Thanks for that. Just pm Snowy for a copy of his paper.
The leatt ones cost a bomb but if they work its worth it. I actually need something to keep my head up while I’m riding. The trials guys said that if you can see your front guard you’re looking down too much.
Will have to go into a big shop and try some on.anyone have any issues with them interfering with thier armour?
May 28, 2013 at 5:33 am #242563I ve a Alpine Stars one that goes with Alpine Stars A10 armour, it works OK but i find wearing my backpack a pain in the butt as the straps pull the brace to one side and i ride like a deformed chimp.
Fits fine with the armour though.May 28, 2013 at 5:38 am #242564no neck brace and I still ride like a deformed chimp……… only much slower
but seriously, I have been contemplating getting one.
May 28, 2013 at 6:11 am #242565Got the pov pack leatt it goes ok have hit my head on the ground to test it. Can’t say if it works or not but haven’t had any injuries.
The other day i forgot to pack it in my bag and rode the day without it and it was pretty comfortable not wearing it though.
May 28, 2013 at 6:30 am #242585I’ve bought the Leatt Body Armour and the Leatt Neck Brace …. the armour has panels that remove for use with the brace that create a moulded fit on the sternum and the back. Also has elastic straps that hold the brace down against the armour on the tips of the shoulders.
Both are still brand new and unused as yet
So I really can’t say how comfy (or otherwise) they are.
After my recent “off”, I decided not to scrimp on safety, even bought Asterix Knee Braces …. I’m probably going to look like Jabba on the next (first) ride, but hey, bring it on!! :woohoo: :woohoo:
May 28, 2013 at 8:01 am #242586Ive got the EVS neck brace and find it comfortable to wear all weekend riding.
They are well priced and saved me big time when i had a big off down at Kowen Forest this year.
As Mal said, once you wear one you feel lost without it and very vunerable.MCA have a great range.
Cheers Marty
May 28, 2013 at 8:12 am #242566Freaky Friday!
I bought a bike less than a week ago and have been trawling through the myriad of info on here and only last night wondered if I’d get a neck brace and what the current feeling was about them amongst other riders.
Now I have lots more reading to do (thanks to mal for the links)!
May 28, 2013 at 9:06 am #242567Holy crap Razzle your gear is going to be almost as valuable as your bike!! 😆 You’re totally right Mt guys with the good gear are the ones that walk away rather than getting carted away via ambulance (or riding 30 plus kms THEN going to the hospital
)
I have the o’neal body armour suit all in one and fox roost deflector for when its too hot to wear the all in one.
Looking at the two neck braces, EVS and Leatt, there is quite a bit more engineering that has gone into the Leatt. Neither is going to stop your head hitting the ground but I think the Leatt is more likely to stop the neck whip effect that tends to kill you/ cause a lot of injury. From what I can see of the EVS it wont be much better than one of those soft neck guards unless you get the $200 leatt knock off.
Maybe I’ll start with the basics. I don’t really travel at high speeds or do anything that challanging to be honest. But this picture from Toby Price’s facebook page got me thinking
May 28, 2013 at 9:37 am #242592The neck brace topic is here again  not a bad thing either, as technology advances and products change its good to revisit some topics from time to time.
I recently bought new armour and my purchase was with the thought of getting a neck brace soon, so compatibility was a big factor.
Is it a case of going into a bike shop with your armour and helmet to get the right fitting neck brace ?
To me it seems like a big deal to get a proper fitting one, can the wrong fitting safety gear be just as bad as no safety gear ? :ohmy:Hey Old Girl, don’t fall into the habit of thinking that you ” don’t ride that fast or you don’t do anything that challenging” you can have a bad stack at 20k’s  don’t need to be hooking in to have your day turn to shite and get a chopper ride.
Thanks for the thread

I know I probably sound like a complete sook now, but three months off the bike, after only just getting back on it, hurts a lot. A pathetic little 5 or 10kph stack has cost me a lot. Time off work, time off the bike, not being able to do “normal” stuff around the house etc etc.
Buy safety gear! …. and buy a killer bike too if you can afford it
:woohoo: :woohoo: [ok, I think I just blew the sympathy angle … ah well, I may have been slightly exaggerating about the “shittiest bike” bit]
May 28, 2013 at 10:31 am #242568I recently bought a leatt adventure neck brace and leatt armour to suit. I’ve found it to be very non-intrusive and haven’t noticed any restrictions during normal riding. I have only felt my helmet touching it a couple of times following going over some drop offs. When I told the war office that I wanted to spend some money on more bike gear, she was not overly impressed but after explaining what it was and watching a couple of vids on youtube about it, no problemo. Wouldn’t ride without it now. Best bit of kit after helmet and boots.
