During my short time as member of OBT,which isn’t much less than my entire motorcycling career, it has become apparent that there are waring factions among us 😆
Lighthearted banter between 250/450 ,2 stroke v 4 ,red, yellow, green, blue and orange sorry don’t mean to offend any other colours if I have omitted you, is of a daily occurrence.
But when the topic turns to Adv riding it seems to rally the troops for and against as two distinct collectives. Now never having had any insight into, shall we say the more youthful and energetic side of the sport I am left wondering what it is that I am missing out on.Is the perception that adv riding is lame, boring, soft etc valid by comparison to their more preferred style of riding and to be avoided at all costs 😆 Or does it have a place kind of like lawn bowls for the motorbiking elderly.
Either way I know that I am sure enjoying it regardless and theres been plenty of thrills and spills so far to keep my interested in the sport.
I am fairly sure that as time marches on we in the Adv ranks will see more and more venture across to join inJune 1, 2013 at 1:28 pm #242842“Lawn bowls for the motorbiking elderly”. Classic but pretty much somes it up,

Spot on James.
Either way I know that I am sure enjoying it regardless and theres been plenty of thrills and spills so far to keep my interested in the sport.
I am fairly sure that as time marches on we in the Adv ranks will see more and more venture across to join inIt’s not an ‘age thing’ cause as a wise OBTsprit award rider once told me, was that as we age,
the grade of the ride we go on gets less.
June 1, 2013 at 8:29 pm #242853I am pretty sure it just another way people can take the piss and there is no real malice involved!
June 1, 2013 at 8:48 pm #242854Adv riding is like eating hot firery food, its an aquired taste. I think we trail riders are just taking the pi&@ because we can 👿 thats the obt way isn’t it. But I do love scottys comment,,lawn bowls, that’s a cracka

Unlike some forums most of us who actively post here have spent time together on rides and had a laugh over a beer or 32
You do seem to have a valid point though James as there does seem to be a timeline that sees people getting into ADV and it is somewhere between the adrenaline rush of riding tight singles and pissing your bed every night in a nursing home and borrowing your mates teeth
PS, I ride a 250F so feel free to give it straight back
Hopefully you get the chance to meet us in the flesh at the birthday ride mate.STM
June 1, 2013 at 9:11 pm #242856Can’t wait for snowy to get involved in this one, he has an opinion on adv against real riding
June 1, 2013 at 9:42 pm #242858Well for me I get bored very quickly, so the idea of doing hundreds of kms on trails and road doesn’t interest me, I like to have some rocks some hill climbs and some snotty single trail thrown in to keep from getting bored, I get bored riding a fire trail at clarence for any longer than a couple of minutes. On saying that I haven’t partaken on an ADV ride so will hold my opinion until such time as I do, (maybe in another 10 years or so
)
Cheers
Chris.June 1, 2013 at 9:49 pm #242857I am sure it’s just banter (I know that is how I play the game) I have been lucky enough to do both nearly all of the on and off road aspects of our sport at the best it as to offer.
I have done track days with road bikes, raced state enduros, a4de, condo 750s, played motard, done short track and long track, trail ridden most all places in NSW I can think of and most I forget, I have ridden some of the best adv riding our country has to offer and loved every moment of it.
The adrenaline rush of putting a 250 kilo loaded bike through knee deep sand rut at 60kph or trying to get said bike up big red or trying to get it turned into a corner when going to fast is exactly the same as when I am having a real go in good singles. At times the rush is even higher because I think the consequences can be higher given the big heavy thing will smash you hard if you get it wrong. The mental pressure of doing this sort of riding if you are having a go for 12 hrs is different again.
The sense of satisfaction at the end each day is the same, although there are differences at what has been achieved. For me having ridden singles for years (25+) I wanted to see some of the country and found there were hardly any new areas to ride single style and old ones are either over riden getting logged out closed or torn to pieces by four wheel drives not to mention the constant threat of a head on. New was the key for me, sure you find a new 4 km trail but after a few runs its the same (Murphs would always be a challenge) and no matter how prime your local area is its still all the same in the end for me I am saying. The entire great dividing range along the east coast is pretty well the same if you have ridden it from south of Sydney to the border IMO
I spoke with Craig Hartley last year at the TK ride he is a bloke who has done it ALL on bikes and he said to me it doesn’t matter what he rides as long as he is riding he said he loved cutting around on his 1000cc road bike as much as his 530kTM as much as his 990 adv bike.
As far as the debate adv V singles, well until you have done both properly you will never really know what you are missing either way. I love doing both but for the time being my focus is on adv riding although for the poker run at seaveiw I am bringing the mother of all single trail style weapons to roost all the 250cc four stroke girls and scare myself!!
Also in the last month I have started thinking about I uncompleted challenges including getting a medal at a A4DE, ummmNo offense is meant in the above to anyone or their favorite riding style or areas

June 1, 2013 at 9:53 pm #242844Yes I agree about the taking the piss bit.
MY opinion is The general perception amongst the trail oriented is that nothing “extreme” or what you would crazy would ever happen on an adventure ride. Having not ever been on a “adventure” I am in no position to say. But I have heard about big red and other triumphs of the adventure fraternity. What I believe should be done is to bring adventure riding to the great unwashed in a way that would have them believe it is actually cool. 👿 What I am about to propose is not entirely my idea as I have witnessed discussions of it around camp fires, pubs and at Coffs Harbour Maybe one adventure type motorcycle could find itself on a trail ride in about October and show everyone what could happen on an adventure ride if they felt so inclined. I stress the word “Incline”. 👿
June 1, 2013 at 10:00 pm #242861While the idea has merit  Aaron we could take a 250 single trail weapon to big red although it may make getting there it wouldn’t be enjoyable or what it’s for and the adv would maybe, eventually get around the trail it isn’t what either is about is it

June 1, 2013 at 10:19 pm #242860The responses so far are as I had expected based on what goes on around hear on a daily basis
I guess I posted too late last night and all the other Adv riders were in bed and being Sunday morning are at church so the absence of their responses is to be expected. 😆
As for you brightly clothed beer gutted gentlemen  I have seen the RR, if the body and mind is still willing more power to you,go for it
And STM a 250…….really 😆 your comment on pissing the bed may have the designers at Klim incorporating incontinence pads into the 2014 Adventure range,I know there has been the odd occasion when I have needed such a feature.
Would love to get up to the birthday ride to witness all you lunatics in your element but there is this little ride coming up soon and it may be hard to get a leave pass :pinch:
Bring on the 22nd cant wait :woohoo: :woohoo: You don’t have to read the ride reports 😆
Cheers James
June 1, 2013 at 10:28 pm #242862TB if I was to give you an inteligent conversation about the subject you would be too confused so Ill keep it simple.
For motorbike riding I use a CRF250x.
For adventure riding I use a Nissan Patrol.
OR Adventure riding= gay
June 1, 2013 at 10:34 pm #242863This is going to be a funny day
