Hi all, I had a little off the other day and landed fair and square on the top of my noggin, the ground I had the pleasure of landing on was quite hard and rocky and subsequently scuffed up my helmet a little bit.I cant see any cracks, or dings in the foam inside, but was under the impression once you have a hard hit on them they have to be replaced.
Is this true or just manufacturers scare mongering people into a new purchase as we all know they can be a bit pricey :pinch:
I did hit the ground with a fair bit of force, and very thankfull I was wearing my neckbrace as my head bore the brunt of it.
Bit of a “”how longs a piece of string” question I know but wondering how hard a hit is too hard and the helmet should be replaced
Cheers James
July 26, 2013 at 6:31 am #247058Replace it. No question, especially if the foam is damaged.
What’s your head worth? Shame to bust your head for the sake of a new helmet.
July 26, 2013 at 6:44 am #247059Yeah, Generally it is stuffed James
That`s why there are no fancy expensive painted trick looking lids on my melon
July 26, 2013 at 6:49 am #247064Yes replace it. Rip the guts out of it, drill some holes for drainage, turn it upside down. Put a plant of your choice in it and hang it up where you can still enjoy it.
July 26, 2013 at 6:59 am #247065Ill offer an alternate opinion. Riding dirt bikes I reckon I fall off about once a ride when I am pushing, cant be buying a new helmet each time. If the helmet has obvious damage, dinged or cracked definately replace. If damage is superficial, scuffed or marked, even scratches or a bit of gravel rash, I dont worry. I reckon I have helmets here that have been crashed a couple of dozen times
Depends on your personal risk-o-meter james but mine would have to take a bloody big hit for me to throw it away. Push on the foam around the helmet with the lining out, then on the area around the damage, if there is no movement to indicate a “Gap” under the damaged area mine would be going straight back on my noggin for better or worse.
If you crash next week and your head explodes because your helmet was stuffed I am deleting this post

All care taken but no responsibility !!!I have done the same as that Mr Squiggle, using the old lid to commute to work occasionally when it`s a tad warm ,,,
July 26, 2013 at 7:15 am #247066Hmmm tough one mate and i will have to sit on the fence…
That is, by rights, yes you should turn it into a plant pot but i know that i would make an educated guess as to the damage sustained to the helmet and the impact when i hit the ground. I for one could not afford to replace my helmet just because it touched the ground.
To me, it just looked a little scuffed, but i would check the insides and go over it with a magnifying glass for cracks and dents to the shell. Only you can judge the impact when you landed on your noggin’. Good thing you had that neck brace i reckon!
That wish list just keeps growing doesn’t it mate

July 26, 2013 at 8:45 am #247070Bit of a mixed bag of responses and I can relate to both sides of the argument. :pinch:
I have checked over the helmet and cannot find anything to suggest that its structural integrity has been badly damaged in any way but I am no expert.
Might be a good excuse to get that new adventure helmet
If only money grew on trees, thanks for your thoughts

July 26, 2013 at 10:44 am #247080If its your Adv lid and had a solid hit I’d replace it for sure , higher speeds and the possibility of tar and hard pack dirt coming in contact with your melon it’s a no brainer ( pun intended !!)
Trail lid would be a bit different for me as I’d have way more plant pots than plants by now
Nick
July 26, 2013 at 10:47 am #247084I also think confidence in your gear is a massive thing , any doubts about the integrity of your lid and it will be on your mind when you should be enjoying the ride

If Nickj recycled his lid into a pot plant every time he took a digger he would have his own segment on Gardening Australia
He does tend to ride above his comfort zone :laugh:STM
