Ok, so I have bought a trailer off one of my lads from work. The trailer is unregistered and has been sitting in his garage for a couple of years. I dont think it has a VIN or ID number stamped on it anywhere and it is located about 20 KM’s from where I am at. My questions are as follows:
1. Can I drive it home to my place unregistered ? The fine for an unrego trailer is $596 :pinch:
2. Do I need to get a Unregistered Vehicle permit prior to driving it to my place ?
3. Do I need to get a weigh bridge ticket prior to getting a blue slip?
4. Has anyone else gone through this dilemma ?any helpful comments kindly appreciated.

August 2, 2013 at 5:27 am #247460I can’t answer all your questions Ollie but you will need an Unregistered Vehicle Permit if you want to tow it, either that or put it on a tow truck. You can only use it unregistered to take it directly to or from an inspection.
August 2, 2013 at 5:51 am #247466You can move box trailers around by loading them on another trailer. Did that once by bolting the smaller one upside down on the larger one. Got a mate with a box trailer now? Use his to get this one home and sort it out.
August 2, 2013 at 5:53 am #247467How big is the trailer Ollie, cause if its just a bike trailer it may fit on the back of my truck
And depending on which direction it may not be far from me as I would only be 15 or so minutes from you
Let me know if I can help.

August 2, 2013 at 5:55 am #247470Stuff all that mucking around got a mate ( or in your case Ollie a bloke you know ) borrow his box trailer number plate. Bolt it on tow it home, as you said it has no numbers can they prove its not registered to that plate. Doubt it would they really care doubt it
Make sure the lights workTB
August 2, 2013 at 5:59 am #247461Hey Ollie,
Yes I had to do the same thing a few years ago, it was a royal pain in the arse
I had to buy a compliance plate from a trailer joint, I had to get it weighed prior to blue slip, get all of the appropriate reflectors, tyre placard, etc blah blah blah.
Still makes me cranky now just thinking about it.
When I first went to the RTA I had some young punk trying to tell me that there must be a VIN on it already, tried to explain that there was once a time when trailers didn’t have VIN numbers but he couldn’t comprehend that at all   bloody whipper snapper
As Jeffro said, you can only tow it to and from an inspection place, supposed to be the closest one to your place.
Using another trailer as Ecks said might be the go :blink:Caused much grief but I got there in the end
August 2, 2013 at 7:41 am #247462We knocked up our bike trailer at home using the axel and springs from another old trailer. The old trailer had a number welded on the frame so I just welded the same number on the new one and sent the missus to town to rego it. Turned into a nightmare with no proof of ownership, no vin and it needed an engineering check and weight check, took her all day to do it with 4 trips to the RTA.
Hope you don’t have that much of a problem.
August 2, 2013 at 7:41 am #247463Yeh all that reminds me of what I went through a year or so ago as my trailer req blue slipping. I do also recall having to get a stat dec signed by a copper mate as proof of ownership.
August 2, 2013 at 7:48 am #247464YES you can tow an unregistered vehicle from where it is to effect repairs upon it and /or to prepare it for rego.
Here it is written on the RMS website: RMS WEBSITE LINK
“When you can drive unregistered:
Unregistered light vehicles can be driven in NSW for the purpose of obtaining registration by the most direct or convenient route:
To the nearest convenient location for any other purpose directly associated with the registration process.”There is legislation that covers this but don’t have time to dig it up right now. I’d be VERY careful about swapping plates out from trailer to trailer. Especially considering the minimal cost of rego on a basic box/bike trailer compared to the $1200 odd worth of fines you can cop for doing it.
My brother and I built one of my trailers and at a pink slip inspection about FIVE years AFTER it was registered the mechanic propped us for no chassis No. stamped on it. He took his metal stamps and a hammer and fixed that for us. Easy.

We bought an unregistered truck and drove it home, got pulled over by the coppers and he said it was ok to drive it home to do repairs before rego.

Do the lights work? If yes, just tow it home on your car. NO PROBLEMS at all. 110% legal. I’d have the FRESH receipt in my hot hands to produce to the nice Mr Plod to show that you JUST bought it and were on your way home to fix it up for rego…

August 2, 2013 at 9:52 am #247475Sorry to be the party pooper but isn’t there a bigger issue than a traffic fine?
What are the legal repercussions if you have an accident with the unregoed trailer in tow and kill someone? I am sure that you are only allowed to take unregoed vehicles/plant to authorized inspection stations or repairers and not to old mates house for a few repairs on the weekend. I have had a bit to do with these things with heavy vehicle fleets.
This is no different to riding unregoed in the State forests and I know how most of us are against that!
