G’day
With the XR460/4 having a well earned rest in the Motor Museum in Inverell its time to start to looking at the next Scrapheap bike.
Andrew Meddings has given me an RG250 as the basis of the next Bike.
I have been doing some research and will be needing to find an early 80’s Suzuki Full floater frame to grab the rear suspension from to slip in the back of the RG frame. I will look for a Suzuki disc brake front end with 21″ then lower the pegs about 4″ so I can fit on this little beast.
My intention is to keep it mechanically stock. It will have plenty of poke as it is!!
Potential Suspension source???
If you happen to know of a suitable Full Floater frame laying around, let me know??

October 25, 2013 at 11:00 am #249754Hi Pezz,
Put a list of required parts on here and see if anyone can help, an old mate use to have a motorcycle wrecking yard and still has a lot of parts.
Any one ealse want bits for the “Scraper” list it, you never know :woohoo:Mallee
October 28, 2013 at 5:10 am #249755Well picked up the DR600 Dakar yesterday.
Its as rough as expected, but for $184.50
I had an old set of DRZ400 bars I bolted on for transport.
Note the rear axle is a tent peg and the swing pivot is a . . . . . er . . . missing :woohoo:
I will be pulling the Full Floater out of the back and hopefully it will squeeze in the back of the RG250
Hoping the Front end will fit in too. The forks look ok.
Mallee, I will post a whats needed once I get started. but couldn’t pass on this running gear.
November 16, 2013 at 9:29 am #249756Well . . . . .
The RG has arrived at the Skunkworks.
A BIG Thanks to Andrew for the bike
I have it sitting in the shed next to the donor bike. It is a tiny bike. I have taken a few rough measurements and looks like the complete DR600 Front end will need to be bolted on. Had a look at the DR front rim and it has numerous cracks and will need replacing too. Then a closer check of the rear wheel and it has two big flat spots opposite each other
Looking at the rear floater suspension rocker pivot and the differ by about 20mm. I may just use the RG swing arm and stick the DR rocker in and see how that works. Then get a heavier spring for the RG shock.
I put the Nomad tank on the rear seat and it fits right in there like it was meant for it.
I have to pick up a box of other bits from Andrew this week and then I will see what I have.
November 29, 2013 at 12:14 am #249757A few things to cogitate here . . . . .
Looking at the front end, the RG triple trees have a decent amount of offset, so I will need to do some basic trigonometry after some careful measurements to work out of the DR600 forks will suit.
I picked up a boot load of spares including spare tank, some sidecovers, engine sidecovers, a clutch, 2 x wiring harness’s and a couple of spiders and 14 cockroaches.
Best of all a stock airbox!!
I want to run the stock setup as I will be riding on dirt roads
Once Bill Wilkin and I installed the front end we thought we would put the panels on and check for clearance issues. Need to remove some excess bits off te lower tripple clamp. Also move the Radiator down about 12 mm.
On initial measuring the front wheel wont hit either the header pipes or the Radiator
A few more from other angles. Steering head angle looks to be less than 30Deg but will be adjusted during the build. The screw drivers will be removed before its finished
The rear end is under contemplation next. Seat height will be around 880mm
RG without the body work.
The front end looks pretty straight forward and I can do some adjustments to get the geometry perfect.
I now need to focus on the rear end and coming up with a rear suspension that wont destroy me or the bike
Not a lot of space in there above the airbox. The swingarm will have to be extended to about 600 – 620 mm to make it work.
More to come
November 29, 2013 at 12:32 am #249758This is the Full Floater out of the DR600
To make this work without butchering the RG I will have to lower the bottom shock mount and 20mm. I will also be trimming the top of the Rocker arm so It will clear the airbox. Then extending the swingarm about 120mm. I will put adjustable arm from the pivot back to the swingarm to get the ride height correct.
November 29, 2013 at 1:11 am #249759Wow thats awesome Pez
