OK guys i’m in a bit of a panic at the moment,
On the last lap at Inverell I’ve lost the front end and had a personal experience with a gum tree with a bit of pace ( the better part of 2nd gear ) i’m fine but I’ve bent something in the front end, now from memory around the headlight area was the part that hit the tree. My worst fear I’ve bent the head of the frame, ive got a feeling also it may be the triple clamps but I’m unsure. I’ve tried loosening everything and trying to re-aline everything but it wouldn’t budge from the position.
This picture was taken with the handle bars straight.
the lower steering bearing will not come off, should it come off easy ? also does the sharft look out of true ?
some pics of the head of the frame, due to the CRF’s great wiring i couldnt get it all out of the way but i tried to get the best pictures.
( Don’t judge the state of the inside of the head stem, i plan to tidy it all up )
Any help would be great guys !
September 23, 2013 at 2:07 am #250041Hey mate. Is each fork leg true? And roll the axle as well to check it’s straight.
September 23, 2013 at 2:12 am #250043I’ve checked the axle ( i thought it might of been that too ) and it was straight as straight.
I’m gonna take the forks to the workshop i work at to make sure there true ( stick one end in a vice and rotate the free end ) i think thats the best way to check that ?
September 23, 2013 at 2:19 am #250044Yeah that should work but make sure u check it from both ends . The wheel looks misaligned in the wrong plane for it to be the triple clamps or headstock. If it was the frame they usually distort or crack if you want to give it a close look.
September 23, 2013 at 2:52 am #250042Now that everything is apart it will probably go back together nicely.
Even though you loosened the triple clamp bolts (I assume all) it still may have needed a bit of pressure to put things straight.
It takes a fair old wack to bend a bike, usually the operator comes out even more bent
Check the forks anyway now that there out, may be a good time to change the fork oil too
If your changing the steering bearings then you may need to persuade the bearing off otherwise give it a good clean and grease.

Thats what im hoping has happened adam, the top triple clamp was tight on the forks so i have a feeling all it may have been was they where twisted, but like you’ve said now its apart i might as well go right over it and give it some love. The bearing is going to come off because ive buggered the lower seal trying to ‘pursuade ‘ the bearing off, so now it must go. The top bearing will be removed, cleaned and re greased.
September 23, 2013 at 4:39 am #250046I’m not sure but I think when I replaced my steering head bearings They came as a set top and bottom. Anyway it might pay to replace both at the same time to keep them in sinc

September 23, 2013 at 5:18 am #250047Probably just the rubber mounted handlebar clamps that are bent. The bolts bend pretty easily too.
They move and bend way too easily, talk to STM he has had this problem a couple of times now.

Yeah I reckon LC is on the money, the frame wont be bent with 2 gear off. I have seen the Tenere riser bolts bend and do the same.
Well done LC

This is one of the problems i thought i had as ive had this happen to me before, but this time they are both straight. When i bent them before i got my local engineering shop to spin me up a set out of harder material. Definatly worth the investment.
I’ve taken my forks to work and checked them, forks are NOT bent. YAY !
cheers for all the help guys, muchly appreciated ! will keep you all up to date on how re assembley goes.
October 30, 2013 at 10:59 pm #250050Sorry for the delayed update guys, but good news the crf lives once again !
Re assembly went smooth ( all bar that stubborn bearing on the head stem, nothing the oxy couldn’t fix ) once re assembled everything looked spot on. With a week to spare before upper horton a bit of riding was doneI’ll get round to doing a ride report from upper horton, one hint but, dust
Cheers for all the help guys ! -
