There appears to be a ramp up in Police action with regards to motorcycle riders of late ( and I dont mean Bikies ).
A rider was fined $146 in QLD after he was observed to have lifted a foot off his pegs to stretch his leg.
I am also aware of an instance when a rider who had lifted a hand from the bars to clear his helmet screen was fined for failing to adequately control his motorcycle.I am trying to clarify another case, one where a rider was fined for having a Go-pro attached to his helmet.
It appears that a rider must NOT attach anything to the helmet ( Bluetooth, camera etc etc ) as this is seen to render the helmet non-compliant.I have spoken to the local sergeant and he suggested to look up the Transport Dept rules, I could find nothing there, except info relation to helmets meeting Aust standards etc.
The other issue is that the motorcycle police person doing the booking for helmet attachments will inevitably have on their own helmets, a Contour camera, phone hookup equipment etc.
Anyone able to clarify what can and can not be attached to a helmet and where is this stated in legislation.
Comments and info is welcomed.
regards to all,
ShaneFebruary 5, 2014 at 6:14 am #253931Hi Shane
All I can find is this from the Motorcycle Riders Handbook NSW.http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/licensing/downloads/motorcycleridershandbook_dl1.html
ON Page 61 is this:
Motorcycle specific road rules and signs
rIdING ON A MOtOrCyCLe
The motorcycle rider must:
• Sit astride the rider’s seat facing forwards.
• Wear a correctly fitted and securely fastened approved motorcycle
helmet.
• Keep at least one hand on the handlebars.
• Keep both feet on the foot pegs (designed for use by the rider),
when the motorcycle is moving.Hope this helps

– The GoPro one was in Victoria and was a thread in ADVRider from memory although I cannot fully recall the outcome.
– The hand off the handlebars is an interesting one as from reports the guy in Qld clearly got fined but in NSW the road rules stipulate that a rider must have one hand on the handlebars at all times, ergo then he/she can have one hand off the handlebar. But in saying that I was stopped and chatted a number of years back by a copper who stopped me after I removed one hand to signal/ask him if I should turn around at a road stop (the copper was parked across the road so I assumed road closed – it was and then signalled). The copper made a point of stating ‘next time I will do you mate, never take both hands of the bars as we are sick of picking you jokers up’ (this occurred at the base of Macquarie Pass on the weekend of a bike fatality so let him have his frustration). I did check it with the MCC (was a delegate there at the time) and was told BS, one hand only required (else some one armed riders could not legally ride)
– The foot of the pegs did happen as you say but from follow up media there is more to happen as the Police Commissioner stated that he did remove a foot when riding his bike, and the day after a picture was published of a police officer doing the same. That one seems to be an asshole or overzealous power tripper who needed to up his quota (same as the guy that booked the car window open)

do what we do up here we take the local coppa with us… All good then…
February 5, 2014 at 10:12 am #253945That’s funny because old bikes (pre 60s 70s) without indicators that are registered are required to use hand signals right? Good luck with that.
Regarding gopro: I believe the AS 1698 does specify:
– make no modifications to the helmet
– do not use any attachments, except those recommended by the helmet manufacturer.A gopro may indeed make the helmet non-compliant and therefore the rider is not using an approved helmet.
Police have many exceptions. Mobile phone use is one that comes to mind…

Having just got my bike licence here in qld through QRide I was told by law I must have two hands on the bars at all times and both feet on the pegs while in motion unless stopping the vehicle and only then it’s left leg down with right leg still on the peg in case I have to move off quickly

February 7, 2014 at 6:55 am #253934When i had my DRZ i got pulled over & the Constable wanted to know why I had put my arm out to signal when turning left. I explained that I wanted to make sure other motorists didnt run into the back of me as I was a much bigger lad then & the blinkers may have been obscured by my large arse. :S true story
The funny thing was I had a bright blue cast on my left arm as I had dislocated my thumb a couple of weeks earlier :pinch: & couldn’t use the buttons for the blinkers or the clutch smoothly  :pinch: Anyway he let me go without mentioning the cast or a fine :woohoo: :woohoo:
It all depends on the officer & your attitudeAlthough Times have changed.
