Those who know the Boulder Brothers might also know of the Toughen Up tours they take with their young blokes. To get them away from the women folk and turn them into young men. Well while my young blokes are only 10 and 4 years old, I figured they’re never too young to start learning how to look after me, I mean themselves, so it was time for Kram and the Kramettes to take a road trip.
We loaded up our Big Red Sports car with everything we needed, said our goodbyes and headed west.
Dubbo was our destination and off to the famous Zoo. But as we walked from the carpark to the ticket office, in the distance and on the breeze we could hear the faint sounds of a gaggle of 2 strokes on full song. The Call was too much to resist and we ran back to the BRS and followed the sound like bloodhounds on the scent.
A short later we arrived at Dubbo MX track. It was time to investigate.
Hmmmmm
Ahhhhhhh. After much head scratching and a full examination of all the evidence it seemed we’d stumbled on the MX state titles.
Well it just so happened we had a couple of bikes lurking in the back of the BRS so we ran to sign-on to see if we could join in on the action.
I signed my young bloke up to ride the 10-12 65cc class and even though he’d only ridden his 85 twice, we thought we’d have a crack at the small wheel 85 class as well. I mean how fast can these kids be way out here??.
Now off to scrutineering
After finding out who the fasted opposition was I set about offering some last minute mechanical advice.
We’d never been to Dubbo before so we thought it best to have a quick look at the track.
Nice. Very Nice
Apparently, last minute mechanical advice isn’t allowed out there. So after a little meeting and an apology from my youngest bloke all was good again.
I thought once we signed on, paid our hard earned, apologised a bit and had our bikes scrutineered we were ready to race. But no. It seemed the sign on people can’t count. There were more riders than start gates in both Zy’s classes.
So it was decided that two timed practice session would decide the top 30 riders to compete in both classes. It was time to get serious. It was time to ride.
Zy ride rode well but not knowing the track he was struggling to qualify.
Then all round good bloke and champion rider Lefty appeared and offered to show Zy the fast lines.
Zy was super stoked. “Thanks Lefty I’ll take it from here”
Zylas rode the wheels off in the second qualifying sessions but it was a nervous wait as the times of both rounds were added together and the top 30 announced.
He made it. But only just in both classes.
Now it was time to race. Yeeeeeeehaaaaaaa.
More Dads taking there kids to the Zoo.
Super proud of how Zy rode. Two days, two classes, no injuries, and dropped 17 seconds from his first qualifying time.
From Dubbo we headed to Coonabarabran to chase some goannas with Ezra my little bloke singing braaaap, braaaaaaap ,braaap. Mum doesn’t stand a chance.

The Hastings Valley MCC is holding the next round on the June long weekend. You’ll have everything from Div 1 though to pro open racing over three days.
If anyone’s keen, come along and camp at the track. It’s a cracker weekend. The kids have to go to bed early and the dads play up :woohoo:
