Met the boys at the Pines camping area
Roon, Hungrycreek, Ev, Mal and Gav
Did all the singles heading south.
At the top of our first challenge, Roon decided to pull the pin as he wasn’t keen to smash his way up rocks all day. He has 14 new Beta bikes arriving Wednesday so he didn’t want any injuries.
We worked our way around and down to the Basin where we had a spell and met up with Roon again
Tackled concrete hill and another where met Roon again. He stayed with us for a bit then left to solo it back to the carsAnd then there was six
It wasn’t too mach longer when Mals bike gave up. I promised I wouldn’t dwell on this issue too much, but. Why do they even make dirt bikes without a kick starter???????????????????? The starter was just free spinning and not engaging with the engine. Game over for Mal.
And then there was five
More challenging singles, down expert hill and around Koala trail for a spot of lunch. A bit slippery coming out of the creek but all was good.
Next challenge was Bar hill where I think Ev was the only one to come off. Gav did well to hang onto what I thought was going to be a nasty off.
At the top we said our farewells to Hungrycreek as his new Six Day 500 had taken its toll on himAnd then there was four
We dropped down the Great North walk and then down to valley. Unfortunately Ev dropped his bike and lost power to his front brake so it was back to the cars for him
And then there was three
We moved onto Wave Rock which is always a fun challenge and the over grown single and Hell Hill to finish the day. The loop we did was only about 70kms but they were taxing and fun at the same time
Back at the cars we found Mal with the sherco pulled apart. One of the starter gears had come adrift and was spinning on the shaft thus not turning the engine over. This was a bit of a problem and you’ll have to read the next days report to find out how we fixed it. Ev had fixed his front brake issue so he was ready for day two
Thanks to all who came out.
The conditions were perfect
We had a great day
Some pics to followSeptember 7, 2015 at 12:04 am #262668September 7, 2015 at 11:19 am #262671Thanks heaps to the Murphs for their hospitality, had a great time and went a lot better than last time, doing a murphsberg without needing the strap is one of the highlights of my riding career. Amazon was epic and parts even seemed familiar after looking at Murphs photos for 5 years but it finished off my clutch. So much good riding around the watagans endless single track and steppy hills, cant wait to come back.

I had a great ride thanks Murph. Although short.
Yes the bike should have a kick start but it probably wouldn’t have got me through the rest of the ride. It looks like the battery failed and I’ve read that Li-ion batteries can fail and then not take any charge. Iy had enough the run the injection system but not start the bike. I have boost charged the battery and left it 24 hours and it still won’t turn the bike over. Put an old car battery on and it starts 4 times in a row cold.
The reduction gear that broke is apparently a common thing. I believe it’s a shear point to protect the starter motor but that just my option. I think murph’s fix will last forever but I’ll buy a new one anyway.
