Good question as I have two PW’s that I don’t know the year model of, so I just put a post in the mini bike section on TT. We will see what comes back. From memory Yamaha use the 10th? number in the VIN as a year indicator.

It got the better of me ,so I rang a Yamaha dealer and they said that if you supply the VIN number to them they are able to punch it into their Yamaha system and tell you and that there isn’t any particular number in the VIN that will tell the average Joe what year model it is.

Or you could try this decoder I found on the net……..

I couldn’t get it to work for my numbers as you need a 17 digit number and as all my Yamahas are Japanese imports they only have 12 digits.

The easy way guys is to look at the stamp on the rims and thats the year it was made, I of course have to put on special glasses to enable me to even look at bikes that are not orange, but I do remember from my blue days that this was the sure fire way to identify year models, the only loose link to the plan was if someone changed wheels on you, you really dont need to worry about models too much when chasing parts for them because the buggers have not changed for a gazillion years, Hope that helps

Thanks KtmRat, I;ll check that out as soon as I get a chance, I’ve pretty much guessed the year models never gone wrong with parts so far.

Here is a bit of dirt on the lad who calls himself KTMRAT..
KTMRAT as the name suggests is Orange through to the core,he even has orange hair and beard!!! Albeit some grey streaks are showing through. He owns more KTM’s than the local dealer. He is the head scrutineer at our track, yet his own head could do with some scrutineering if you ask me!!! Actually I don’t think he scrutineers KTM’s he just waves them through.LOL
He is also a grade 1 motocross coach so maybe he can be our KTM tech guru as well as our riding technique adviser???
Every time my kids do one of his schools, their confidence level skyrockets!!!
