It seems that alot of riders carry chainbreakers and spare links in their toolbags.
Is a broken chain something that actually happens with modern chain design? If so, in what types of situation causes the chain to break?

I understand that joining link clips can wear and break, but am a bit puzzled how the chain itself could fail, in normal riding conditions. Even when my friends rear sprocket broke away from the hub, the chain remained intact, albeit a bit bent. To my mind this was a catostrophic breakage of parts, yet the chain survived in one piece.

The reason I ask is because I am deciding as to whether to one day get a replacement chainbreaker for my toolbag . I lent my last one to a guy at Louee, who forgot to return it before leaving  Whenever I need to break a chain, it is done at home with the benefit of workshop tools. ie grinder and vice.

I used to have the opinion that chains don’t break. Who needs to carry spare links etc???

Then I broke a chain, or link clip more likely. I had no spares and nothing I could come up with would get the bike going again.

Problem? Nah not really, but it was in the middle of an enduro!!!

    Now I carry.

Only time I’ve had a chain failure

I have never broken a chain, I run top of the range chains that, being I could buy cheaper chains but dont take any chances. I have just started running rivet master links that are supposed to be the go for a big bike like mine. Now having said that I carry two joining links to suit my bike and three others “O” ring, “X” ring and another one I found somewhere in case someone needs it, I also carry a piece of chain 4 links or something again for justin! (just in case) and like Chicken and Crash I carry a Mini Chain breaker.

Use to snap chains all the time on my Mountain Bike, never snapped one on a motorbike, I do carry a spare
link but not a chain breaker, I just hope chickens on the ride when my chain does decide to snap.
