Until I can get myself a new sharp lathe tool, one little project I want to do is make a fly wheel cutter for my small lathe, making it into a basic milling machine to create flat surfaces on jobs.

For this I need to scrounge some steel bits as described below:

large mild steel nut or bolt measuring 80-100mm across flats

    OR

25 – 50mm thick offcut of mild steel round bar measuring 80-100mm in diameter

The ultimate goal is to make an angle plate like the pic below, which of course means I need to acquire a piece of 150mm x 150mm angle iron about 150-160mm long

If anyone is able to help me out with any of the above scrounge request items, please PM me

    thanks in advance,

    Nigel

Why do you need pic 1 or 2 to make pic 3? If you want to make item from 150mm x 150mm angle then surely all you need do is drill the holes? Where does the milling come into it?

Or do you in fact want to make 2 things, the first of which is made from the large nut OR the round bar that you are going to machine?

    I’m not very clever.

If I had such a thing they’d be yours to have.

Although if I had a lathe I reckon there’d be broken tools strewn about the shed and much swearing and calling-of-the-cops by the neighbours!

Power tools are NOT my friend…though I’d like them to be!

I hear you Shane. I remember having to do milling and turning during my apprenticeship for 3 months. I never had the patience. I did get the lathe bouncing a few times though. Apparently you’re not supposed to try and turn 15mm of the OD of a round bar at once

Or turn the lathe on with the chuck tool still in it….Doh. I never had the patience either Moto.

It was the cardinal rule not to turn the lathe on with the chuck key in it. We had it drummed into us that we had to double and triple check that before we started the lathe. I think everyone still spat one across the workshop at some point though

I withdraw this request for metal pieces. I have some other priorities to focus my attention on.

    Thanks,

    Nigel
