Chris.December 28, 2008 at 1:44 am #116029not bad chris, what condition is it in,no rust?
December 28, 2008 at 1:56 am #116031Thanks Figs, Dunno, haven’t looked yet, the description is galvanised grey, that’s about it. I might nip down and have a look, brand new ones from what I can see is about $1650.00. Oh and welcome to the site.
Cheers
Chris.December 28, 2008 at 2:13 am #116030Yeah sounds good as long as it is clean. I thought I’d save some money and make my own when I scored an axle with hubs rims and springs. Including getting it hot dipped its gonna work out to cost almost 7hunge. If I worked that out when I started I would’ve just bought one
December 28, 2008 at 2:45 am #116032I’ve done a bit more research and have found brand new ones for $950.00, I’m now in dilema wether to get an 8*5 and get it modded for the bikes at least then I can use it for carting other things, or wether to buy a bike trailer and a 6*4 box decisions decisions. I don’t have much space to keep them that;s my other issue.
Cheers
Chris.December 28, 2008 at 3:03 am #116035I’ve seen an 8 by 5 with the front of the tray angled fowards with wheel indents in it looked good and versitile
December 28, 2008 at 6:00 am #116037I’m in your boat Chris, no room and wanted something other than just a bike trailer. Ended up with a 7 x 5 thinking that bikes’d fit in lengthways with no trouble…WRONG! (At least I think it’s a 7 x 5! that’d be the OUTSIDE dimensions!) Feller in Penrith made mine but it’s painted not dipped and to be frank, I’d probably prefer a gal one…but the cash was burning a hole in mypocket!
December 28, 2008 at 6:35 am #116036Chris, a Mate of mine has a 5 X 8 box trailer and he has made a frame out of angle iron that is like a H pattern with top and bottom sections, the whole thing just laid in the bed when he wants to cart bikes, the tops and bottoms have a straight tube section that is 5 foot wide and stops sideways movement and the length of the thing is 7 foot so forward to back movement is impossible, the whole thing sits there and is held down with the tiedowns of the bike, weighs nothing takes seconds to convert top normal box then to bike/box, real easy and was done in two rums, piece of piss Mate
December 28, 2008 at 7:18 am #116038A 7×5 boxy will fit a 3 bikes in, I know I used to do it every weekend.the trick is in the way you do it.This is how…..
2 bikes;
1. put bike in trailer with wheels in corner of trailer.
2.lift bikes up onto side of trailer yeh it looks funny:laugh:
3.secure your tailgate using the securing bars/lugs or whatever it is that your trailer has
4.lift the back wheel of the bike over so that the bike is straight in the trailer.
5.the bikes rear suspension will compress and shorten the wheelbase length
6.tie in the bikes
7.go ride3 bikes nearly the same deal except the tailgate cant be secured normaly, you just have to tie it up as far as it will go using a rope or whatever.
go riding
ollie
December 28, 2008 at 8:18 am #116039Ollie, so if the trailer was an 8*5 you could easily do 3 possibly 4, 1 big bike and 3 minis, then you would not have the tailgate issue, I hadn’t thought of making a frame for it (thanks Rat), I could get a mate of mine to make up a frame to slot into the trailer, so my next question is what would be the lightest metal to use, they do a lot of stainless but probably aluminium would be lighter (excluding CF)..
Cheers

Perfect Chris, depending on what thickness you use you may have to brace in the middle to stop flexing inwards, but even if it does it wont alter anything, Alloy would be the go and permanently attached is a hassle some times when you need a totally flat bottom, Good luck my friend
