Mkay so this isn’t going to be a question for the XR boys with their screw/locknut valve adjusters…(BASTARDS!)

I’ve notice that the clearances on the Vor have closed up a bit and I’m hoping that others have a similar valve adjustment system and have had a go…I HATE paying mechanics to fix my things…unless I really stuff something up!

Do I take the shims out, measure the gap and do a little maths before procuring the appropriate sized shim?

Is there some tool or something used to measure the shims and tell me the right size to put in?

OR…do I carefully file down the current shims to get the correct clearance?

I’m assuming that the valvs are wearing and as a result the clearances are closing up…might be time for a headjob…:woohoo:

What are you paying Shane, normally I charge a can a valve :P

I can and have done them before and be happy to help for a price!

    I also have the tooling.

    Nah not valves…yet!
    Just the shims (I hope!)
I can get the head off and the valves out (when I need to and I reckon itd be easier than the XR with it’s bloody fiddly cam chain tensioner), I can’t however machine the seats, so when I need them done…

In the meantime though, just needs some tips on how to collect the correct shim size.

No you bone head I charge a can for every valve adjusted!!!!!

Head doesnt need to come of, I will need to do check the clearances first before we need to work out what shims are needed

Here is a number of steps to you should be able to follow.Unfortunatly I am a qualified Engine Recondtioner and forced to work with hundreds of these shims every week so I will make it simple because it is.

    Measure clearance with feeler guage

Write clearances and which valve on paper

Remove T/Chain tensioner, stuff a rag down front of engine so you don’t drop bits down there (if you do its all over)

    Remove cam gears and cams

remove shims and bucket with a magnet, keep them in order

measure with digital vernier or micrometer, write sizes next to clearances

You should be able to do the math from here

You will need your bike manual to know how to reset timing chain tensioner and timing marks on cam gears with engine on top dead centre

A magnet to pick up shims buy from Repco or an auto shop

a set of digital verniers from auto shop $30 – $200

a set of feeler guages, talk to Ballards or auto shop

please reply if you have any questions

    Thanks for that Mr WR450!

I need to purchase a micrometer and vernier I guess…good excuse to visit the tool shop!

Good thing about the Vor is, it’s gear driven and if onecompresses the valve springs the buckets come out with a ‘magnet on a stick’!!!

Clearances TB? I can’t remember…after the nxt ride I’ll pull the covers off and check them again, properly. (God I hop KTM o Hberg bucket shims fit!)
