AnonymousWhat size wire do those tie wire pliers use? As much as I love tools, I can’t justify buying a set, but was curious if they just use the same tie wire that I have seen in rolls at Bunnings.
Leading on from that, if you do use the Bunnings type wire for handgrips etc, what size of that do you use. Please be specific, not just “the small guage stuff” type answer. I have read that some riders use Mig wire, but I don’t have access to that sort of stuff.
I just use copper wire to “lockwire” the sump plugs and oil filter bolts, but will soon need to replace the hand grips and the copper wire just won’t tighten up enough without breaking. Maybe I should just glue the grips on.

February 19, 2009 at 2:11 am #123049Slug, I believe the tie wire is Stainless wire, the stuff at bunnings is gal or similiar, have tried it bit won’t tighten enough before breaking just like the copper.
Cheers
Chris.February 19, 2009 at 2:12 am #123050mate I cant offer much help on the wire sizes but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the pliers/wire in a kit thats rather cheap.under $30.00? once you got them, you always got them?

AnonymousBeing the unemployed scrounger that I am, I twist the wire using a hand drill and a wire hook mounted in the chuck. I loop the wire over the hook, wind the crank hand. It may be a crude method, but it works like a champo!
February 19, 2009 at 2:32 am #123053I lock tie everything on the race bikes and I only use the proper .032″ Safety tie wire, Mig wire is to brittle and you cannot get the tension right without it breaking, the tie wire pliers are worth their weight in gold if you are planning to use them on more than one bike and we race four so it was worth it to me, you can get real cheapies from ebay.
Try this http://www.parrmotorsports.com thats what is written on the roll I have
February 19, 2009 at 2:46 am #123055Same as rat on all accounts, my bike has everything bar the rider lock wired on it and it should him wired as well
February 19, 2009 at 2:52 am #123057Yeah I tried that TB but they thought I was a bit extreme at the races, so now we just use speed tape on the hands…..they were right the tie wire could cut into them I suppose:huh:

AnonymousJust saw that mob (www.parrmotorsports.com) on ebay. About $40 delivered for a 1 lb roll. approx 347 feet.
February 19, 2009 at 3:39 am #123063I got a set of cheap pliers off ebay years ago and the cutting part screwed up in the first six months, but the swivel and clamping parts still work fine, and for the $20 I paid years ago its good value, I just use side cutters to cut the wire now and its all good, I think I have about 50 years left in the pliers yet:laugh:

F#@%k Off!!
seriously though, I imported very high quality ones from the states and they will last a lifetime but because our dollar is crap I dont have any in stock and probably wont in the near future. like Dave mentioned .032 annealed stainless steel wire the grade to use is 304
the cheap ones are perfectly ok to useollie
February 19, 2009 at 4:53 am #123068I don’t use lockwire, so things come loose, but not my handgrips. I put insulation tape on the end of the bars, swish some petrol inside the grips and bung them on. The petrol melts the grips and they cure on to the insulation tape and NEVER move! Top tip!
February 19, 2009 at 5:28 am #123054I like the sound of this very much, Especially since i own said hand drill and not the wire twisting pliers….thanks for the tip slug…i shall investigate this method..Though I’ve NEVER had grips come loose or off the bike.
February 19, 2009 at 5:59 am #123071Wireing your grips is only used to stop water and Mud from working its way up the tube.you should also use glue/petrol or whatever to work in conjunction with the wire. Happy Days
