the time has come for me to start thinking about a replacement for the Hilux.
Poor ol girls a 1995 mdl (2.4 ltr petrol) suspension is getting pretty sagged and the motors done 280 000 k’s.
by my rough estimates it would cost me about $5000 to do the suspension and motor, but it would still probably only be worth about $3-4000.So I’ve started thinking about what I would replace it with
Obviously I still need to transport a bike or two, would like to also be able to do the odd drive into the forest etc with the family.this has me thinking about either
a soft 4wd (Rav4, Crv, X-trail etc) with either a Ezimotow or a folding trailer (due to my limited storage for a real trailer)or a dual cab (4×2 or 4×4) of some description.
I know absolutley nothing about dual cabs in regard to whats good and whats not and even less about soft roaders.
Forgot to mention I hope to spend less than $15000, rather than more
love to hear othe ppls thoughts
April 10, 2009 at 8:23 am #128647Buy a soft roader and we will all be coming after you, self uppercut for even thinking it, tray back 4×4 dual cab about 2005 , look at rodeo or simular, do not get a soft roader youll be soorryy:S
April 10, 2009 at 8:32 am #128655Mate the Twin cab tray back 4wd Hilux diesel only way to go, had 3 now, first one 1989 2.8 non turbo 650,000km, till I rolled it and gave it to a mate, the thing still starts first kick now, 2nd one was a 1989 also 450,000 km till I hit an embankment(after a flat tyre) twisting it bad, 3rd one now a 1999 sr5 Dual cab 4wd 3ltre diesel, heaps better than the 2.8 and gets better economy, 550km to 55 litres, has 358,000KM on it a still goes well, you should expect to pay between 10 -15k for a nice one, unbreakable, and unstoppable bar rolling and embankments:laugh:
April 10, 2009 at 8:36 am #128658I currently drive a 1994 tray back 2.8 turbo diesel rodeo 348000 ks. can not beat the old girl. would only buy brand new if she had to go:(

April 10, 2009 at 11:39 am #128661thanx Guys, will check out both the Hilux and rodeos, but have been told by a few ppl that the rodeo’s are pretty thirsty ?
April 10, 2009 at 10:51 pm #128676should probably add what I meant by “drive into the forest” I intend to stick to general access roads only to get to picnic spots etc
April 10, 2009 at 11:49 pm #128684Just a cuppla cents worth ….In a recent 4×4 mag, an all out challenge on teh Dual cabs was done, Hilux last spot. mazda’s Bravo cleaned up..this was done in an “as delivered state”. If one is to believe whats written( i fear some take Cash for Comment) the likes of the Hilux and Rodeo are slipping more to road warriors rather than OFF road warriors. Now for a Question from me, of those who OWN Dual cabs, do your bikes actually fit in them or do you have to leave the Tailgate open ? Just Curious as like MudRat, I’m thinkingg of going into the market for something similar..I was frowning onmost cause they look to short to hold a bike, all except eh landrover cerew cab..but it dont look to comfy in there?? No doubt it’d go anywhere though.
April 11, 2009 at 12:00 am #128685Mate as far as soft roaders go, I’m on my third Suzuki Grand Vitara. If your only doing rough forest roads they are great. If you doing sand driving they are awsome. Only reason ive uptraded is because the last 2 got writen off. 1996 model hail damaged. 2002 model became the victim of an asian women in a Nissan Patrol that couldn’t tell the difference between a red and green light. Loved that car to, had no plans of getting rid of it. 2.5 V6 towed bikes no probs
You can pick good one of these up for under 15k. If ya need more room you can get the bigger XL7 with 2.7 V6. Ask moose about those I’m sure he’s got one.
I got a great deal on a new 2008 model, 2.7 V6. Heaps of power and a bit bigger inside than the older model. Took it up to stockton beach over christmas and it made the beach feel like I was driving on the highway.
I wont be trading this one for a long time, I just gotta avoid those big 4×4’s that are being driven by people who should never have been given a licence.

If your not looking to 4×4 i’d go the 2×4 route and save in the running costs. I had a 2×4 hilux and it was fairly high anyway and could go over some fairly rough ground.I don’t think they come with LSD’s. Back seat comforts average. Mate from work just got a 3.0 non turbo 2×4 and it goes well for non turbo towing his boat.April 11, 2009 at 12:13 am #128688Husky610
from what I’ve read you will need to have the tailgate down. You also need to secure the rear wheel and tailgate.
April 11, 2009 at 12:27 am #128689I bet the Nissan Patrol drove away from that bingle, awesome truck those Nissans, especially that model in that colour.lol I have one in my driveway.
You are right Scotty, Moose does have one of those flash Suzukis and by all accounts is very happy with it.
