Geez Ollie’s words of wisdom sure saved me there! I took his advice and typed it up in word the c+p’ed and hit post and it lost the lot!
Here it is again but it might need a touch up. In fact I get the feeling it shit itself because the post is too long :woohoo: YEP that’s gotta be it hahahha too much gibberish!

Warning: Long read ahead and only one picture.

Mitsubishi still hadn’t fixed my car so the weekend started with me having to drive up to the airport to hire a ute again which stuffs me around nicely. I loaded the bike up about 730pm and headed for the central coast where i was to meet the crew for Saturday’s ride. Originally there was going to be about 10 of us but we ended up with 7 in total which was my brother and I (both on 07 250EXCFs) Andrew and his brother (‘08 300EXCE and ‘09 250EXCF) and Brendan and Adam (WR250F and CR250R) I knew all of the guys except Adam and had ridden tugalong with Brendan but hadn’t ridden bush with any of the others. Andrew and his brother live across the road from Menai and have ridden there since they were teenagers so I was confident they’d push the group but I knew that my brother wasn’t sold on bush tracks as he preferred mx to the point he’d taken his barkbusters off.
Since I wasn’t overly confident in leading from pines/casuarina I was thinking that we’d set off from letter A and hit the 2day enduro track but got talking with the guys on Friday night we decided we’d give it a shot. While we were having a beer on the Friday I asked Andrew how his new Arai helmet was going and his jaw dropped. He’d left it behind. He started with the excuses that he was used to riding from his garage and I immediately grabbed my phone and caught my brother as he was driving through Cronulla from Wollongong and got him to double back to menai. Close call there.
I was up early to oil my filter and I wanted to tinker to ease the anxious nerves and Andrew and his brother came down and gave me some good tips on bike prep/maintenance and I learnt how to fix my spongy brakes for next time.

I decided we’d park at casuarina unless we spotted some other riders at the pines in which case we’d gauge if we wanted to join them to help with navigating. We stopped at the pines and Brendan and Adam knew a couple of blokes but didn’t want to ride with them so we decided to go it alone. I was a tad nervous because I’ve only been through the wattagans twice and had never led a ride but I figured we’d give it a shot. I took the guys through that short run from the pines to casuarina to warm up and then gathered them up to run through the cornerman system and explain that if they got separated they should wait on the corner and we’d find them. A few not-too convincing nods and I explained that I’d be leading them through the S/T parallel with wattagan forest road so if we got lost we could find it and start again.
We set off around 10 and started through the s/t behind the sign and heading east. After about 3 sections I accidentally brought us back out on the main road and the pressure was making me a tad anxious but we soon found our way back in and that feeling soon let go. The corners were mostly dry and soft so the running was pretty steady straight away.
I had my first off early when I came to a fork and chose the wrong side but thought I could do it. I waved the others around the easy way then popped up the rut pretty easily only to have a sneaky black boy jump out of nowhere bringing me and my bike to a dead halt and tipping me back into the knee deep ruts. I don’t know if i fell slowly or thought quickly but I had just enough time to think oh shit this rut is going to break my leg when the bike falls on it but not enough time to do anything about it. Thankfully I was wrong but I was knackered by time I got the bike out of the rut and went around the chicken track. I caught up with the boys and started leading again only to take another hard alternative which was a knee high log. Again I thought bugger it and kept into it getting the front over ok but didn’t carry the momentum so the back didn’t make it and I had to drag it across.
We waited at the next open junction and could hear a fair bit of revving from what we figured was the boys trying to get over the log I got stuck on. When they made it out they explained that the ’09 250f was stalling and running rough so they had a bit of a look and figured he was flooding it getting on and off the throttle too hard. He flogged the guts out of it (‘cause that fixes everything ;) ).

It had been about 40minutes and my brother had been dragging the chain and not getting a rest as we’d set off as he caught up. He soon piped up and said he was keen to get out of the s/t and hit some open stuff and Brendan was keen too. The others were loving it but we agreed we’d try and find some of the flowing stuff to the north west up behind casuarina .
We clocked up some open stuff running into a few dead ends including where Ollie and the guys took Ben and I down that nice rocky hill and up that tight short hill we didn’t make. I was tempted to take them down there because half of us would’ve enjoyed it but it would’ve ruined a couple of them and we’d all pay the price if they were buggered that early so we headed back up to the forest road and continued NW. Pretty soon we made it down near the farms and I told them I was getting bored and wanted to lead again and Andrew agreed so we all headed back up to what I think is New road (looking at google maps).
Before we got off the main run we agreed we’d do a bit of single stuff off the side of the main run and then head back for a bite and if they didn’t like it we’d split up. The fun started again as we found a happy medium doing short s/t along the edge of the open road but we managed to drop the 3 stragglers and when I went back for them there was no sign. I noticed that my left bark buster was shaking around and pulled the screw out but didn’t notice the err dynabolt part? Anyway I lost the bit that expands as you tighten the screw to fasten the bar end connection.
It was only 4kms back to camp so we decided to check there before scouring the bush and sure enough the three bludgers were into lunch without a worry about us so I chipped them a bit and explained why they shouldn’t just leave like that but it was an easy lesson.

Over lunch the guys said they were getting into it and wanted to stay with us so I planned to take them along the 2 way stuff on the north side of the forest rd heading back east. We set out and it didn’t start off too smooth but once again we picked up a good flow between 2way and s/t stuff that was keeping everyone happy. Till my brother ran out of puff again we were taking off every time he caught up again and it didn’t give him a chance to breath so he let out a very definite “JUST WAIT A DAMN MINUTE I’M ROOTED!” which I mocked and laughed at because I’m his little brother and that’s what brother’s are for
We ran for quite a while having a great time and finding some new tracks and riding some I recognised and even found a couple of hills that we sent the others around while we played. I wasn’t positive on where I was relative to the tracks I’d ridden previously but I was feeling fairly confident I knew where I was along the way so we kept a reasonable flow and had a great time. We got to a point that we all agreed we’d head back taking our time by exploring as we did. We found some more short singles and 2 ways along the way and then came to a boulder hill which looked too fun to go around so we split the group and a couple of us had a play but it wasn’t too much trouble. After that I told the guys that were struggling that they could tap out when they wanted to and we chased each other through some tight sandy stuff having a ball. Before long it was just me leading and Andrew and his brother and we picked up the pace and kept it flowing all the way back to the pines without stopping. I hit the woops in the morning and didn’t go too bad but couldn’t quite get it flat out so I hit them harder this time and had a good run through the first three sets but then didn’t flog it all the way through the tree lined set because I was feeling it a little. I knew I had to give it a good run after Ollie got into me for letting him pass last time :D

Heading back through the stuff I knew I felt like I was riding better than ever and it felt like it was going forever which was great because we were having too good a time to feel tired. Eventually we popped out at the pines and the three of us were absolutely stoked with the arvo run. I kept gaining confidence all day which just helped my riding although we didn’t ride as hard as my last OBT run I felt like my conditioning was getting better too. As was mentioned quietly at that last run I’ve only been riding a short while and I’m getting more and more stoked with the sport with every ride!
Next run is the 30th or 31st of May – will post up when I know where unless someone else is keen for something in particular. A couple of the guys had been there before but not explored so much and were really impressed so they’re keen to come again soon.

BTW I think it wasn’t the length that was making it fart word turned :D into its own smiley and I think the board didn’t like it.

Nice report Trent, good to see you are getting out and getting them skills honed! I could be keen for a ride on the 30th if you go :)

Karma for your hard work :)

PS – Yes it is the word generated smileys that will mess the copy/paste up.

Cheers guys. Noone gave me shit I just felt like I was “entertaining” the guys since I asked them up here so I wanted to show them just how good it is compared to appin and menai which is where they ride. I also wanted to convince my brother that trails are so much more fun than MX.

TBH I really enjoyed my first lead because once we got going the exploring was part of the fun and they were a good crew of blokes to ride with. A few of them were good enough to push me and give me some pointers which is what I really like the most.

I think it’ll take a few more runs to get familiar enough to lead you blokes though ;)

I’m heading to lovedale long lunch (all day drink)on saturday then doing bike maintenance on sunday mate.

Great report Austblue. It’s hard stepping up to lead a ride for the first time. Well done.

    Karma for that tip Ollie!

Was he busted riding in the bush or out on the road? The guys said on the weekend that they’ve been riding there for ~15 years and never been stopped! I have heard of a few people getting pinned at white rock and I still see quads and young punks running around there which worries me.

Daniel (andrew’s brother) had a collision out there with some bloke about 1month ago that sheared his footpeg off! Some how he avoided any serious injury.

He was done in the bush by a nice Policeman,I said serve you right, mxers are for MX tracks or private property. Your mate was lucky,My mate Rick had a head on years ago on my 85 KTM500 his knee cap got smashed to bits and he has got a permanent limp now.Still rides good thoughB).To many wankers ride at white rock which makes it bloody dangerous, not to bad if you go at daybreak though:blink: Thanks for the Karma mate;)
