DBW9 – Dust and Glory!
Our adventure started Friday morning, my brother Doug and I rolled into Catombal to be greeted by a beaming Keg (DBW owner) and bulldust out the yin yang! We rolled the bikes off, geared up and headed out for a warm up on the trails.
After we got back JRD rolled in and soon discovered that his bike had run out of electricity. No jumper leads so we improvised with tyre levers:
Then it was off to have a crack at the consistency loop. Doug was aiming for a Bradman award – getting the highest difference in times, only to find there was no such thing!
Winners were Felroy, Disco and I forget who else, on 2 seconds different for each lap. I managed joint a second place at 5 seconds.
JRD bummed out with a flat rear, and that was the day done.
Saturday we arrived bright and early and ready to roll. We hooked up with v8r, Whiterocket and DrPhilWR450 and hit the trails. We did most of the easy ones – Twisties, Zipper, Worm and headed down the Drop. I was first to go and was pleasantly surprised – it was much nicer than last time I saw it:
Then it was Doug:
Then Whiterocket:
Then JRD came down:
DRPhilWR450 was nervous and walked his bike down – he could have ridden it I reckon!
The lads at the bottom of the Drop:
So we headed around the hills down the Brake Tester then lined up for Fern Gully. The hill on the lead-up is usually good for a laugh:
Fern Gully was not too bad, Doug and I got up with no problems, but JRD laid the Gasser over and was (very) quickly back on two wheels – trying to avoid photographic evidence!
Alan did it well too:
JRD struggled…
DRPhilWR450 would have been ok except for the Gasser that kept getting in his way!
V8r took an alternative route:
The Hillclimb Competition:
Mal had the best attempt – failed, yes, but spectacular!!
Sunday morning was the Poker Run. Dust was the flavour of the day, but it was great fun – with prizes for all!
Then we headed out for a gentle warm-down ride with some mates:
Thanks to Keg and all the organisers and sponsors. Thanks to MKB to opening Catombal for us – again! Thanks to all who made the trek and had a weekend in the dust. I reckon it was tops!

May 19, 2009 at 10:54 am #134983Actually I don’t recall one DRZ either now that you mention it.
There wasn’t even an XR there I don’t think, although there were a few CRF’s. A few Yammie’s but otherwise it was largely exotics and KTM’s. There were a lot of Sherco’s for the small bunch that were there I thought. A fair few Gassers too.
We all had a good weekend, it was good fun and good value. As whiterocket said, some of these blokes can REALLY ride! I didn’t have a go at the hillclimb mostly because I reckon I would have made a fool of myself bigtime!
I reckon Louee can be as good or better with the Old Bulls!
