Well it’s not that bad but I’m a bit uneasy about finding a ball bearing on the floor next to the bike last night because I have NFI where it has come from!
Background is as follows:
I’ve mentioned previously that I stripped my oil drain bolt and I’ve just now taken the motor out so that I can get it re-tapped and a helicoil put in. So I set out pulling the motor out using the repair manual for guidance and after removing the rear shock and header I noticed a ball bearing about 4mm in diameter on the ground next to the rear wheel. My rear wheel bearings seem fine (hard to check when the swing arm is off) and they’re only very new so I don’t believe it’s come from there but I can’t figure where else it could’ve come from
I’m working on top of an old rug so I’m sure it wasn’t there before also. Heim joint looks all sealed up still so I don’t think it’d be from there if that even uses ball bearings.
So any guesses where it could’ve come from?
For those of you that might be concerned I’m doing this in that shed I previously posted pics of you can relax because I have my own garage finally! I’ll post pics of that when I get some decent ones at the moment I just have phone pictures which are very grainy. I can do a write up on pulling the motor for the KTM section if anyone’s interested but I mostly just followed the repair manual which is very helpful in most cases.
Cheers.

Good Luck AB I am no help sorry
July 28, 2009 at 4:20 am #145506Well said Admin. It’s critical that tech questions are taken seriously even if the questions may seem stupid. Otherwise, the said person will never ask again…. one of my pet hates from “other” sites…
WRT the ball bearing, that bike is a Kato and I’m assuming 2stroke? (just saw the sig – 250excf!) Either way, motor stayed intact… 4mm BB is quite big and for it to escape from it’s race that bearing must be really shagged – if it came from your bike – which in my opinion it did not. Sounds to me like a BB from a bicycle bearing as they love rolling about the place here (cheap sht).
So no, I can’t think of any BB that big on Katos apart from the wheel bearings which shouldn’t “fall out”.
Hope that helps ease the anxiety.July 28, 2009 at 4:23 am #145510Cheers. Nah its 250f as per my sig. I’m going to give the bike a good going over while the motor is out so hopefully I might get a better idea.
thanks for the help so far guys.
July 28, 2009 at 5:11 am #145505I will now try to help to the best of my knowledge. I have had a similiar find on the floor of my workshop and the BB ended up being out of the straight bar and socket set I was using to take off my rear wheel. It may simply, but may be worth a look.
July 28, 2009 at 5:21 am #145512Hey Austblue
When I did my sump plug helicoil job on the 525, I didn’t have to take the kickstarter off to remove the engine. It could be out of the kickstarter if it was removed. They have a BB and a spring that sits in a notch to keep the kicker out of the way when riding.
Thats my 2 cents worth.
Good luck mate
MurphJuly 28, 2009 at 5:32 am #145513You might be onto something with that! I had taken the spring off the foot brake lever and removed the rear master cyl. Is there a bearing in that? I’ll take a look in the manual now.
July 28, 2009 at 6:24 am #145500Hey austblue, I know this wont help you now but when i did my sump we layed the bike over and pushed a rag up the sump and then drilled and tapped the sump hole very carefully removed the rag fitted helicoil and sump plug stood the bike up and all was good. Cant help with the ball there is one on the kickstarter but you havent removed that so cant be that one. Hope you find where it lives, good luck.
July 28, 2009 at 6:50 am #145501Hey AB,
my suggestion would be to go through the parts book if you have it, the one with all the exploded views.
see if you can find all the bearings it that and find them on the bike and as you have done inspect them.
but as most are saying it is unlikely to be from inside the engine.
and if it was from a bearing on the bike it would be easy to see where it had come from because something would be really loose or making all sorts of bad noises.
did you remove the kicker?
the head stem will be a tapered roller so not from there, but that’s obvious:blush:
the only other thought is if someone had used the BB to block off a breather/ vent hose.?
hope you get it sorted!
July 28, 2009 at 8:32 am #145522What about the clutch slave cylinder, there is a ball that pushes in between the rod and the cylinder it self……I think….have you removed the slave cylinder and just left it hanging…..just check the exploded views and you might find what I am talking about, I will check here and come back to you
