The middleweight Berg is on the front cover of the shiny new AMB that just landed in my mail box.
Mmmmmmmmmmm Berg!
July 31, 2009 at 3:44 am #145972The guys at KTM were telling me that its not a strick 390 just a sleeved 450 with a shorter stroke
Shame really but we’ll see how it goes.
July 31, 2009 at 4:33 am #145976If that is the case why would anyone buy it over the 450?

Why do does Chris Hollis run a detuned engine in his 450 ?
Why do major race teams as one of their setups calm the power delivery out in a 450 ?
Why are FIM looking to get rid of the 450cc class and have a 350 four stroke class ?
Why was Ben Grabhams 2008 Finke winning Honda run a stock engine bar for a vortex, rejet and exhaust system ?
How is it in the motocross desnations 2008 in the heat when the 450’s raced in the same race as the 250’s Ryan Villopoto beat the open class bikes on a 250, on an out door track ?
Because the bike is easier to ride faster for longer and in testing they are quicker for longer its a fact. And if the guns cant use all the bike all the time how are us wood ducks going to do it?

July 31, 2009 at 4:57 am #145979Less inertia plus less stroke travel means that it’ll rev faster won’t it?
July 31, 2009 at 5:17 am #145981Why was David Knight running a 480cc BMW?

July 31, 2009 at 5:44 am #145985Yeah yeah TB, but it begs the question why FIM would dump the 450 class when all the manufacturers mass produce them?
Unless the manufacturers actually want it this way so they can re-invent and re-sell the enduro bike?
I cant see much point in down sizing the bore/stroke of a 450 unless the whole bike is also re-engineered to save weight.
Smaller sleeve and rod wouldn’t save much weight, if any.July 31, 2009 at 5:57 am #145988WikdBeemer wrote:

Smaller sleeve and rod wouldn’t save much weight, if any.I heard it had a lot to do with speed and power outputs and safety

Here is what Stefan Everts said about the whole down sizing but would he really know much
Stefan Everts, team boss of KTM’s factory team and 10-times MX World Champion is particularly positive about this prospect, saying: “This is definitely a very good move. With development of the latest technology, I am sure that riders will in fact be able to go quicker on a bike less than 450 cc. These will be lighter and more fluid machines that are also better suited to the current track layouts. This is valid beyond the Grand Prix racing scene and it will be excellent for amateur and hobby riders. The 450 cc bike is much too powerful for a amateur.”

July 31, 2009 at 6:13 am #145973I agree with those comments TB as I have a 570 Berg and I have to admit it has way to much for me but it is nice to have way to much, probably a wiser choice would be a 390 and I am considering adding it to my Berg stable.
Cheers Gotchya
July 31, 2009 at 6:20 am #145992Yeah says I that rides a 650  Its got more than I will ever use, although it is milder in it delivery

And the same reason Ben Grabham has chosen the KTM400 over the 450. Sometimes less is more.
Makes me think if these guys are so much faster on a smaller bike maybe I should be looking at an XR70 or something similar.
July 31, 2009 at 8:45 am #146006I know a Bloke who is really quick in knarly less than handle bar width single track, and he rides a YZ125WR, yep you know who you are old fella…
.
and he smokes like a chimney and doesn’t mind a 6 pack or two, so it ain’t all fitness.
