I reckon I have to get this off my chest and you blokes will understand.

Woohoo going riding for a decent ride tomorrow, going with young Craig (KTM300 ’06 and XR250 ’03 for kicks), he’s my regular riding mate been riding since he was a nipper, going up to the border ranges (his backyard) so it’ll be on for young (him) and old(me)

lets do the once over on the bike
    Clean
    New graphics.. lookin’ good
tyres ok, pressures good, drilled holes in centre knobs of rear 952 to try and get grip
rear wheel bearings cleaned and greased
    chain cleaned, lubed and tensioned
    new brakes at front
new EGV plug and supertrick plug cap off my RZ500R
    Fuel tap modded for reserve
all gear assembled, back pack has new first aid supplies and tools/spares.
Boots waterproofed, googles cleaned, Mmm new gloves too
    Cables all lubed and adjusted.

let’s give it the final once over…Mmm what’s that oil dripping off the frame? oh looks like the sump plug washer has given up ok, drain oil WTF only 400ml comes out and filthy too, this is not good.
Runs around town looking for new washer, gets a dense rubber one fits it torques bolt up to 15 flbs, fill up with new DXIII 800mils cool. wash oil off and take for blast round yard, yep all good shifting posotvely, clutch action excellent no harm, response good and brakes work.
at 7.00pm, lets load the bitch up and pack the ute, dinners done washings done, kids are settled, early start tomorrow…WTF is that pool of oil under there? get torch FUCK FUCK, Crap crap crap double crap, it’s leaking from between the inner cases right up in front of the swingarm… crap crap crap, ok nip the case bolts up, start bike yep still dripping.

Well stuff you Karma I am still riding tomorrow, take a litre of DXIII in the backpack and top it up if need be.

    Anyone else have these weeks?

    Cause i certainly have

Yeah I know how you feel remember this

Well as some of you may know (moto has been dropping comments) I cracked the engine on 650 two weeks ago whilst changing the oil by over tightening the sump plug.

GREG BALL MOTOR CYCLE ENGINEERING at Kirrawee did the repair for me after I contacted Scott from Battyes in a mild panic. I pulled the engine out and took it to Greg, Greg quickly put all my fears to rest and told me how they would fix it and that there would be no long therm problems.

I left it on the Monday morning and had it back Wednesday arvo for $60, and what a great job. Crash picked it up for me and he rang me to tell me what a great job Greg had done.

Go ride tomorrow and fix it later

    Hey Bruse
Is it the case bolts or Engine mounts as my 05 300 KTM use to leak coolant if the front engine mount bolt was loose

    Cheers

Yeah I know I’m not the only one, but it truly looks like my case bond has let go, which means in the very near future i predict a case splitting …Great fun cause bottom ends only 40 hours old, TB I know I’m in good company at least.
Dr D. good idea, but I’m fairly sure it’s not to do with engine mounts as it is a good 5″ off the next one, but I have seen that before as well…maybe you never know may be worth a try anyway.

Bikes loaded now, just gotta get some food togther so I’m goonnee and it only leaks when the clutch/gears are spinning so essentially it’s a splash leak, but still a placefor oil to escape and water to enter, hope craigaroony doesn’t go for one of his “hey Woose it’s only 4′ deep over here!” tracks.

That’s not good news Bruce :( I hope it holds out for your ride and is an easy fix for you later :)

    Puddle of oil you say?

That’s how euro ridrs check their oil. If there’s a puddle under the bike there’s still plenty left!

You Jap riders really worry over nothing!

I had a late 70’s XL250s that ran for months with no oil and when the front forks were done they had to scrape the oil out of them, it looked a bit like vegemite!

Anyway, it’s a good thing to return oil to the environment from which it came.

It’s the rums talking I promise!

Thats bad news Blue, but put a positive spin on it. The oil that is coming out of your bike is there for corrosion protection. A lot like an old Landrover.

It’s like when you go for a ride and it is pissing down. That is mearly dust suppression:)

Most good leaders of a ride organise a bit of dust suppression, either the day before or on the day. Look at the Caves to Caves ride it rained a bit but everyone had fun and there was no dust:)

I did have a bit of that over the weekend myself but I might start my own thread because I need a bit of tech help myself. My bike had already had a helicoil put in the oil drain bolt and the dodgy shop drilled it on an angle so now my oil drain bolt doesn’t sit flush. I spent a lovely Saturday afternoon/evening putting my motor in and cleaning everything and bleeding the back brakes etc and it was holding oil then but as soon as I got temp in the radiators on sunday it was very slightly weeping out the drain hole. Not enough that it would drip but enough that I could see it around the washer and have it in the back of my mind all day.

Then I had a little lay down late in the day and my magic button and kill switch stopped working so I had to kick it *gasp*!!!

To me it was just a tad disheartening after doing the right thing putting in the prep time only for a couple of things to go slightly wrong. Of course that’s being way too sensitive and I snapped out of it to enjoy my ride but I feel your frustration.

Still had a great day with my new pivot pegz and handlebar dampeners though! I’ll have to do a little review this week.
