Mrs Cee’s ’98 laser is quite a smart car, she’s had it for years and looks after it well, anyway doing the once over yesterday morning before I went down the street I saw a “grease” line on the on the spokes on her 5 spoke CSA alloys, went to wipe it of and discovered the spoke has snapped, right in the middlebwtween the hub boss and the rim edge. No marks on the rim, she says she hasn’t hit any potholes, which generally if hit hard enough will do the rim in anyway, got me buggered I mean it used to happen years ago with magnesium rims, but these are cast alloy. Just happy I saw it before she went on one of her “I speed everywhere, because the police don’t care about an old lady in a little car” drives to the next town.

Got me beggared how this could happen, So has anyone seen this before?

Same thing happened to mine Bruce, it has 5 double spokes and it snapped through one of the pairs. In the week before I noticed it I had taken a wrong turn in the wattagans and driven about 50Km of rough dirt road and had hit a gutter at about 40km an hour. A lot of the Mag wheels are made in China where they have had a reputation in the past for putting out some dodgy materials.

Yep seen this a number of times. Ever wonder how so many tyre stores are offering very cheap mag wheel and tyre packages. Cheap wheels manufactured in China. Don’t need to hit anything to stress a wheel, they take large lateral loads when cornering.

Ok not just us then, but quick Q? these are ten year old CSA mags, which i always thought were aussie, but you then know what asumptions are based on, rumour and innuendo.

I cracked a wheel on my old Rover Coupe Turbo, I wasn’t going slow when it happened either! I pulled over to see a crack straight through one of the spokes and a big chunck of the spoke missing! I had owned the car for 2 days at that point. Shortly after both drive shafts, cv joints and the gearbox let go. All at seperate times…of course :)

    Anyway, I digress….don’t buy a Rover!
