I have been asked to sort out a starter problem on a KTM400. It will only start every now and then on the starter. It has a brand new battery in it but when you press the starter button…….nothing happens. Then all of a sudden out of the blue it will start if you hit the button.More often then not it will not even turn the starter.I am inclined to think it is the actual starter button, but if anyone else has experience with a similar problem please post up.
September 14, 2009 at 11:57 pm #152762Does it have a key as well, I had the problem on the WR, it turned out to be the Barrell where the key was not engaging all the time, took it off and replaced the key with the button included in the spares kit, sorted, but I don;t think KTM;s have keys.
September 15, 2009 at 12:11 am #152764nah no keys, this bike is really tidy and has never seen a dirt road and has bugger all km’s on it.
September 15, 2009 at 12:14 am #152765is it one of the new 400’s or an older one.
September 15, 2009 at 12:30 am #152766It is an older one,it is silver and orange. I would suggest about a 2000 model.
It has one of those kill buttons that dont stay “clicked in”,unlike the newer models.September 15, 2009 at 12:41 am #152768A continuity test on the wiring Mick?, what jumps to mind straight up all else being equal for I is a “dead spot” in the starter motor itself, or the dodgy killswitch scenario

September 15, 2009 at 12:51 am #152770I can fix a dodgy switch but the dead spot in the starter maybe a job for a auto sparky.
September 15, 2009 at 1:08 am #152772A dead segment on the actuator would mean a new starter, multi meter and test the continuity of the switch like Blue said would easiest start point
Why did they give it to you?

September 15, 2009 at 1:15 am #152773It is the bloke who owns the building I work in and he has seen me with a Kato or two in the past and asked if I would try and sort it out for him, as he has no mechanical aptitude what so ever.
If I get it sorted, it maybe worth a carton or two
I am just gunna pull the switch apart and spray some contact cleaner in there for starters and work from there.September 15, 2009 at 1:20 am #152774micknmeld wrote:
