TB gave me an Omega neck brace from Suttos to test and give a review on. I haven’t worn a neck brace before and was thinking of buying one soon. This brace looks the part and slips around the neck like a horse shoe.
The initial set is a bit fiddly and hard to do alone. You need to have it on and your helmet handy and then have someone make the adjustments. I did it myself to start with and went for an 80km ride with all types of terrain. I took about 2 hours to get used to it. It was hitting the back of my helmet when standing on down hills. Sitting and standing any other terrain was fine and once I was comfortable with it I did notice it was there. I was the same when I bought my pressure suit.
The second ride with the brace I had a friend make adjustments while I was wearing it. It looked like it was sitting better but when on the bike and going downhill, the back of my helmet was hitting the brace again. I rode for over an hour until we had a break then played more with the adjustments. Medogrocket has a Leatt and you can see the difference in the photos of the distance between the brace and the helmet. We tried all sorts of adjustments and still could not get the brace to pivot back far enough to be comfortable. The front is also to low and you could overextend the head forward.
We came to the conclusion that this brace would maybe fit a thinner framed person better as there would be more adjustment. I’m fairly thick through the chest area and I found a youtube video of a guy fitting one and he is a bit thinner in the chest. So if you’re a bean pole of a person then go have a look at these neck braces.
I like the shock absorption design of the brace. If I could get the plate to tilt back a bit more I would buy one.
Here is a few photos of the Omega and Leatt

Cheers
Chris.November 27, 2009 at 11:36 am #162964Great report Mal, and thanks to Mal at Sutto’s for hooking the brace up for test. Its a good looking brace and even though you run low bars Mal the difference in the amount you can tilt your head back can clearly be seen.
Again Mal really good report and photos, I will see that a copy gets to Mal to be passed onto the importer.
Cheers mate and thanks again for putting the work in

November 27, 2009 at 7:25 pm #162972My biggest ongoing problem with the leatt is that my alpine stars spine protector pushes it up causing the same problem. The only solutions that I’ve found so far are don’t wear the suit (not happening) or wear my back pack with the straps sitting over the leatts side lugs to hold it down in place. With the latter I forget its there mostly.
The other problem is the size of your neck while its on. This means you have to modify pretty much anything you want to wear over the top. I was planning on doing a review on the Ogio flight vest but I tried it on with my leatt last night and the rear neck line is too high with the brace so would need to be sliced open like my armour and jersey but I don’t think its a good idea.
I’ll still do up my own thread though and it’ll be offered up for someone else to try. Shame it looked the goods

AnonymousIt’s worth noting that I was originally going to demo the Omega neck brace and couldn’t because my neck was too wide and it rubbed. It does look like a quality piece of kit though.

but thats better then a fat neck

AnonymousI’m just not built like an overweight garden knome like you. If it had some lateral adjustment it would be fit a much larger demographic.

) I was just stating a fact was all. It doesnt rub on my neck which I did find strange I must say
I think your fat neck happened after you said

Ok now back on trackI would be interested in it being trialed by another person, not because I doubt Mal’s opinion for a minute as I very happy it was him testing it. I would like someone with a different bike and outlook to give their thoughts
Thanks again Mal

November 28, 2009 at 2:12 am #162965Hey TB,
How much did ya say we could get these Omegas for ?? And what is the availability??
I might be keen to snap one up after XMAS, will see how much $$$ I get off relos etc :laugh:On the Brace itself,
Not that I am any expert or anything :silly: , but when I tried it on at Dan`s a while back, it seemed to fit pretty good , was comfy (without any armour on at the time) And I reckon it would be a great buy for dudes on a bit of a budget looking for extra protectionNovember 28, 2009 at 2:28 am #162991Will get back to you with a price on Monday Beags
