So with the first OBT motard ride coming up I was wondering what is motard ride etiquette?
Is it like a trail ride dont pass the leader?
Do you have a sweep?
If you have a sweep do they wear a vest or is there something else a motard sweep wears maybe a feather?
Do you go up the inside or around the outside when passing someone?
Are wheelies correct etiquette?
Is backing it into a corner correct etiquette? (I did my first back in today cheers for the tips Mal)Who has any idea?

AnonymousAll good questions TB.
I personally really like the cornerman system but I, ummm, don’t know how to say why I wouldn’t like to use it on the road. I guess I am thinking about the pie in the sky ride and pulling in on a road bike to a place with a heap of other riders wearing a fluro vest. I know it’s safety first and all that and it’s good to be visible but……
So how do you get around that? I am not sure. Also there are some that don’t like getting stuck being the sweep and that’s fair enough and you would think that on a road ride you should be able to get away with not having one.
However on the other side of things the corner man system is a really good way to make sure that you don’t lose someone on the way. Because if you lose someone then it could waste a heap of riding time trying to find them. Maybe we could modify the corner man system that means that you don’t have to wear the vest or a feather  . Who wears a feather on a road ride? What about just a thumbs up system. That you stay on the corner until you see a rider coming that gives you a big thumbs up.
I still think its a good idea for no one to pass the leader. Chances are they probably know where they are going but just in case I think bush rules apply here.
I think that they should go around the outside when passing. Just in case you try and be considerate and move to the left. You don’t want to clip them as they go past on the inside.
I don’t think wheelies are a problem. Just make sure that you are not going to clip someone elses handlebars when you come back down (TB)
Feel free to back it in if you are skilled enough to do so.

AnonymousGood question TB.
My spin on the leader thing is the same as normal trail etiquette. You can’t / shouldnt pass the leader, as they know where your going / should be.
Passing should be allowed either inside or outside – as long it is safe to do so.
Sweep rider – well I think a coloured vest would be a bit scooterish (gay) on the road, it probably would be best for everyone just to know who the sweep is.
Backing it in or wheelies – shit yeah that stuff is cool either on the road (in a controlled and private area of cause  ) or on the dirt, (as long as someone see’s it)
That is only my spin on things I am open to debate on my comments.
December 9, 2009 at 11:59 am #164610I think no over taking the leader. I wont cause I don’t know where we are going.
No hi viz vest. We don’t need to attract any attention.
The rest would up to the rider. Just ride safe and within your (and the law of course) limits.

December 9, 2009 at 12:16 pm #164637There has to be some sort of corner man hasn’t there? Maybe you could pass the leader and go ahead to the next intersection?

December 9, 2009 at 12:26 pm #164638All good points and I might add for tar work
distances at speed are sometimes deceptive so be aware
and
braking in the wheel marks in the lanes is essential , this is to avoid the oil drips in the center of the lane, this is most dangerous coming up to intersections as cars are slowing down and the drips are more numerous….I still have a sore elbow from this lesson learned 25 years ago…… at Stacey street Bankstown,…..sat 10 am, two up RD400, on the limit,…. now that is a different story…..December 9, 2009 at 12:30 pm #164639Thanks Rat but your the only drip I would be worried about and you wont be there
Seriously your right (for once) and painted lines etc etc etc

December 9, 2009 at 7:18 pm #164640The last time I got booked (25 years ago) was for overtake near side,so be careful with that one. We were riding side by side talking and because I was the one closest to the gutter I wore the fine.
With a group I wouldn’t be inclined to do the nearside overtake as the auto matic reaction when being overtaken is the vear left.,if you are with a mate that would expect you to pull a caper like that, fine.December 9, 2009 at 9:44 pm #164643Motard Ride etiquette would be to stay out of the road of dirt bike riders
December 9, 2009 at 9:47 pm #164654I rode across the grass yesterday on mine (dry grass) and nearly went arse up  they have nothing in the way of traction of the black top. Made me think and have a lot more respect for those motard racers on the dirt sections
