Hope Murph doesnt mind me kicking this report off.
wow what a great ride. i was extremely excited about this ride and drank the least amount of alcohol on a friday night since about age 15. 4 drinks !
went to bed at 9 had a broken sleep due to the excitement. woke at 5 loaded the bike on trailer then noticed i had a message. it was from Diddel.
“no ride for me phone has switched itself of during the night” so i ring him he has just woken up. i say no worries just get in the car and drive straight down ill hold murph off for 10 minutes or so. he says no wont make it i call him a pussy and ask where his commitment is.
i jump in my car and turn the key.
click,click,click.
c*nt wont start ! flat battery, no lights left on wtf ?i ring the NRMA bloke turns up hour later. he is drunk as ten men first job for the day and has been out all night. he could hardly stand up.
new battery put in $176 bucks.
.
Murphs ride have long been suspected of being cursed now heres the proof.
hope everything goes well out on the trails. Poor Murph will be wondering where everyone is.
December 12, 2009 at 7:03 am #165003Well I turn up at 6.15 to find only Murh there? Gilli turned up next & no-one else
We waited to about 7.00 & thought we’ll this looks like itWe followed Gilli thru some good singles and where well & truly warmed up by the time we hit the top of Hitchcocks.
The back luck for this ride was with us though as I had a flat battery in the kato(new battery 2 months old) .Murhs steed was overflowing coolant(we suspect it may have been overfilled) & also a leaking oil seal  . We decided to go down Hitchcocks & see what happens with the steeds. All seemed well as long as I don’t stall so we turned around went straight up Hitchcocks without incedent. Then we headed down zig zag & back to Dunks via Watagan State Forest rd. Back to the cars about 10.am. With only 3 riders we covered plenty of tracks managed about 60km for this ride
It was a good ride thanks Murh & Gilli.
December 13, 2009 at 1:35 am #165030Cursed by Murphy’s Law
Arrived at kick off point about 6:00 followed by Tryhard and Gili
Knowing how keen tf2 and Diddel are we waited for almost half an hour before pulling the pin and headed off. First track was Boyds which had a bugger of a tree hop and a short steep rocky single which couldn’t be hit with any speed. Rode down “Panadol Hill” (The only way possible in my mind)and followed a great single looping back up to Boyds via a steep rocky hill. Bloody tree hop again  where Tryhard gives the Kato a tad too much gas and almost launches off into the bush. Looked impressive though :woohoo: Up the steep rocky pinch again. then onto some more great single to “Prick Hill”
Gili had already top out when we got there so we didn’t see which line he took. Tryhard hit it but took the wrong line. He nailed it on his second attempt and when I got to the top I was beginning to worry about the amount of coolant I was losing  More single to the next power lines and then did a great section of single that I hadn’t been on before :woohoo:
It was decided that we head up and along Watagan Forest Rd (WFR) for a while to get some air through my radiators. Stopped near the top of Hitchcocks still losing coolant  and now realising my LH fork seal had completely blown out   and was spewing all over my brake disc. (Only put a new seal in 150kms ago) Tryhard also had issues with a dead battery
Rode down Hitchcocks and at the bottom a coin was almost tossed to decide whether we would have a crack at riding back up. After some indecision the choice was made to give it a go :woohoo: So we charged back up to where the rocks begin. Was hoping to get some photos here but Tryhard just kept going so then it was game on :woohoo: :woohoo:
Climbed every one of those gnarly rocky sections with none of us stopping. At one stage I could hardly see from the amount of steam bellowing out of my radiator
Great hill climb, one of the best I have done :woohoo: As we waited at the top for my bike to cool you could see the adrenalin slowly abate so it was off again back up to WFR then down Whitemans and an awesome section called “Zig Zag”. Followed “Maculata” for a while then headed up “Daniels” to meet WFR.
Back at the cars around 10 ish with 60kms on the clock
Packed up, said goodbyes then back home for a swim
Thanks to Gili and Tryhard for a top day out.
Tf2 and Diddel sorry to say that you missed a great little ride
I will be working on extending what we did with some ideas that Ollie had., another 20 or so kms would make it an awesome loop. Maybe in the cooler months though
Not many photos, as you all know with only three riders the pace is pretty quick
Cheers
MurphDecember 13, 2009 at 5:29 am #165004Murph,
sounds like a great ride.
All i can say after reading your report is
ahh F#ck !bloody Diddel asking to start early. if i had of got up and went through pre ride routine of startin car and hitchin trailer i probably would have had time for nrma to turn up fix car and still make ride.
due to the early start everything was done the night before.
its easy to look for people to blame in situations like these and unfortunately Diddel is has to cop it on this occassion. :laugh:on your fork seals, Lotsa put me onto a trick for seal preservation.
cut up a piece of foam thin, bout 1/2 cm wide and as long as it takes to wrap around your fork leg. slightly oil the foam and jam it betwen outer fork seal protector/dustboot and inner seal. acts like an airfilter picking up dirt. take it out and wash it every couple of rides or after mudy rides. i had a leaky fork seal which he fixed with the old feeler guage and have since used this method and havent had a problem since. i used foam from the ironing board.
cheers
tf2December 13, 2009 at 7:32 am #165082Come on guys we need ride report pics! You too tf2 I’m trying to picture what you’re talking about.

December 13, 2009 at 8:48 pm #165114Have not heard of this foam between the seals trick, may give it a go when I replace the seal again  I can see how it would help stop forign material from entering but like you said you would definately have to clean it out very regulary
Will also check and maybe replace the bushes inside the forks
Cheers

MurphGood ride by the sounds of things Murph.
I do like the sound of this fork seal helper/saver thing. My WR is a shocker for blown/weeping fork seals.
December 13, 2009 at 9:07 pm #165142Good report guys. Sounds like a usual Murphsberg ride.
Time to update Murph with all that liquid flowing out of the bike.
Here’s the couple of pics you sent.

Can’t see me getting a new bike after buying the bride a new car
Will try 1) new fluid
2) inspect water pump impellor
3) check coolant pressure (ie suspect blown head gasket)
10000kms on the clock, it has been a good bike. Can’t remember ever topping up the coolant (except for the other day when I added some no name brand) and it does get checked before every ride
Dan
The foam sounds like the go but it would also act as a dust catcher too and would need to be cleaned every other ride me thinks
Nathan
That sounds a bit steep for a battery  Then again I have not bought a car battery for a very long time.
Will be organising another ride in that area soon, still could add another 20kms or so. Might try and jump in on Motos ride around Xmas
Cheers

Murphyour meant to push down and clean the dust protection bellows/boot regularly any how. the foam is just a second form of defence if the dirt gets through the outer bellows. in the times i have cleaned it out i let 4 rides go by and there was not dirt in the foam. on another occasion i did 2 rides and found a couple of particles in there which means if there was no foam it would have most likely got up under the inner fork seal.
and $176 for a battery is steep. (lucky its a company car)
when the nrma patrolman turned up he wasnt too happy. you could tell he had been woken up at 5.30 in the morning to attend the call and had about 20min sleep prior to that. he was like a drunk clown that attends a kids party  angry and smelt like a brewery.
I asked him if he wanted to get a photo together putting the battery in but he declined for some reason
i got a call from his boss later in the day. seems the patrolman had forgotten to record any details of callout on his job sheet. All the boss had was my name and phone number. the boss was very grateful when i told him what job he had actually done.December 13, 2009 at 10:30 pm #165146
AnonymousSeems like a ride plaugued with troubles, but all rides are good rides and I would have still like to have been there.
Funny thing is I would have showed up as a last minute entry if it wasn’t so early. I was considering it for a short period of time but I would have had to have been up at 3:30am!
