Not sure how many of you still race but it looks like a quite a few. The dates for the northern inland pony express series are:
Uralla 28th March
Bike Territory (Narrabri) 30th May
Inverell 27th June
Narrabri (Llara) 25th July
Moree 15th August
Goanna Tracks (Coonabarabran) 12th September
Upper Horton 23rd October
The tracks are great and varied. If you are a grade 3 rider or above then you all the skills required to try these races. The series has been growing over the last few years and last year we averaged 122 bikes per race (up from 90 the year before). There are 7 classes:
A Grade (4 hours/2 riders)
B Grade (4 hours/2 riders)
Ironman (4 hours solo)
Over 35’s (2 hours solo)
Over 45’s (2 hours solo)
C Grade (4 hours/2 riders)
Ladies (1.5 hours solo)Last year was the first time we had a ladies class and I think they all loved it. The numbers in ladies are still small so if you are a rider of the fairer gender then there is a good chance of getting a trophy.
We put up everyones lap times now on the web so you can cut through all the bullshit and compare yourself to your mates and other grades. We have even tried electronic scoring with RFID tags on the bikes. It’s not quite fine tuned yet but hopefully we can get there. The stickers that go on the bikes are 50 cents each so it is a low cost option.
It is a very friendly atmosphere and everybody helps each other. A Great day out.
We are thinking about introducing a “rally” class this year (might be named different yet) designed for people who just want to try it out. There are no series points in this class and once you have a podium finish you are no longer allowed in rally class any more. Time to step up to the plate in the appropriate grade.
Anyway if you come look me up. I will be there this year after missing all the riding last year with a broken wrist. Not sure what grade yet. I’m keen to do B Grade again but Blue has ditched me for over 35’s after my lack of performance last year. Might end up doing Ironman yet if I can’t find a partner for the series.
Anyway if you want to see if you know anyone who competed last year or the lap time presentation go to our club website http://www.narrabridirtbikeclub.com/ponyexpress.html
January 7, 2010 at 10:54 pm #167510Me and Stex rode most rounds last year and had a ball. I’d certainly recommend the series for anyone wanting to give racing a go. Lots of fun and will be doing it again this year.
Bundyroy, any chance of an over 35’s class you could ride with a partner over 4 hours. It might be a way of reducing the C grade grid size which got a bit out of control last year.
Gotta watch that first corner at Bike Territory this year mate
January 7, 2010 at 11:46 pm #167523You obviously know me or who I am anyway. Paid a high price for trying to practice the home track. We have thought about pairing up the over 35’s. I’ll ask around and see what others think. May not be a bad idea. We certainly need to look at ways of getting people out of c grade. The top 3 or 4 teams will be forced into B grade this year. From memory once they go up it will even the fields pace up a lot and give everybody a chance. The only reason over 35’s was solo before was lack of numbers. I’ll get back to you.
I just saw where you’re from. You put in a big effort just to get there. Very keen!

January 8, 2010 at 12:43 am #167534Is house 35 yet? I know he looks old but I don’t think he’s that old. We’d let him in anyway I suppose. After all nobody would question it based on that face.
January 8, 2010 at 1:13 am #167536Im looking at sweep riding on all the events bundy.
dont want to flog the drz racing but still want to participate.
Boony
January 8, 2010 at 5:56 am #167538Boony, we will never say no to sweep riders but you know that the yellow banana will love the racing, come back for more and still never die. I saw an xr and a drz pair up for 1st or 2nd in C grade last year (memory’s not so good). Tamworth boys too. With a bike like that you know it won’t be the bike that lets you down.
January 8, 2010 at 6:21 am #167561rode the DRZ in the horten round,,well I rode it to the first corner and had an incedent involving one of the blue things.
