A mate has stripped the thread in the head for the spark plug on his sons XR70R, what is the best fix? It’s a 2000 model if that matters.

Jeffro they make a helicoil kit for all spark plug threads I am sure. If it was me I would pop the head of to do it because they are easy to do and only cost you a head gasket, otherwise heaps of grease on the drill bit and tap to catch the metal fragments should be right.

If I can help PM me mate

Otherwise I have a spare XR70 cylinder head at home which we maybe able to work a deal as an exchange or such

That’s what he was talking about doing mate, head off and all, he just asked if I would check he was on the right track. Thanks TB

You are welcome mate. I can give you the spec’s and tensions if he needs it. Its simple once the timing marks are aligned

bugger… typed up a response and it crashed.
I have to recommend the guys that TB put me onto – they did a great job including installing a new insert complete with a bolt ‘seat’ due to the fact that the previous douche installed a helicoil on the piss.
IIRC it was less than $90 but I suppose if you have the tools to do it yourself then it should be fine if you’re going to pull the head. Greg Ball Engineering 20/4 ethell rd kirrawee nsw 2232 9521 8470

Thats an idea AB he does do good work. I will do it as well if they bring it down, buy the parts and come for a drive if he is unsure Jeffro, bring the bike complete take me 1 to 1.5hrs total job and only charge 6 bundys  Sounds like you have it covered though ;)

Greg Ball Engineering are no longer in Business as of last week :( shame really because they did good work at a reasonable price.

Not sure mate, but Madmac rang them up with regard to repairing a sump plug on a Polaris Quad and they said they had shut down as he was retiring I think.

Bugger again. I wonder, did they recommend anyone ollie? It’s a shame when such a good tradesman doesn’t have someone to take over.
