    I was lucky enough to score a Pirelli Scorpion Mid Hard rear tyre for trial late last year. After the success a lot of us here at OBT had with the Pirelli Scorpion MX extras like;

For the record I thought the rear wasn’t a bad tyre, a good value all rounder. Haven’t tried the front.

I haven’t had a chance to write up a report on this tyre yet but I can say that the tyre really came through for me in the changing conditions on sunday’s ride. If only they floated a 100kg bike with rider too hey! We did a lot of clay, some sand, rock, and loamy stuff and most of it was wet but I didn’t struggle for traction anywhere and although I wasn’t always pushing it out I found that it was very predictable – this would be better tested in the dry though since the limits are easily crossed in the wet.

Well I took advantage of another great deal from mal and sutto’s on the pirrelli’s and here’s a report.

I put one on the front and the back at the same time so I could try to see any difference, I fitted them and inflated to my usual pressure 14psi just before our two dayer to Araluen

    WEAR
The riding conditions were dry and hard with lots of sharp rocks and there was next to no signs of wear, no destroyed nobs and only just a little bit of rounding – pictures to follow
Almost 400km so am happy in this department

    FEEL
Rode until lunch on the first day and at that point thought the front was shite, felt like it wanted to washout all the time, skatey and not confidence inspiring at all. I remembered some one on here saying to run a lower pressure so I dropped to 8psi – completely different feel, didn’t feel like washing out half as much and seemed to still take those hard rocks hits – I didn’t get a flat so happy with that.
The rear was fantastic, it hooked up everywhere and was still at 14psi, no complaints thus far.

I went for a quick blat for a couple of hrs on sunday with new member Pauly where the conditions were soft, moist and cool, we rode over all types of ground and the front end was flawless, no hint of skatey, washout type incidents at all, I felt really confident and had an absolute blast – got back to Pauly’s place for a beer with a huge smile on the dial.

    SUMMING UP
I think after the initial use the pirrelli’s got better, they still don’t show much sign of wear even after some sliding, skidding, and trench digging that only a kato is renowned for :P :P :P , I am happy with these tyres thus far and would purchase again

Thanks sutto’s and tb for the deal

    cheers Hatto

I brought set last Saturday put rear on and very happy with it pissed down rain last sunday at clarence hand no troubles at all heaps of grip very happy :)

The MX extras I saw were used by the KTM team at the A4DE and they won 4 or so classes so the tyres must be good to make a KTM look good

Mal5.1 used them at the 4 day also with terrific results, traction results that is

    Pirelli Scorpion Mid Hard

With the success of OBT members with the MX extra Mal at Sutto’s thought it would be worth trying the mid hard. If you dont try you will never know

Well after 810kms on my bike I can say the Mid Hard isn’t anywhere near as good as the MX extra.

The tyre was used on the wet ride that Boulder, Crash and myself did, it was used for pre running the Sofala ride with Chicken and Mal5.1, it was used in the first 30 klms of Mick’s saturday birthday ride and the Sofala ride.

I have found over time the MX extras last longer and hook up better in all conditions. The Mid hard never left me stuck but wasnt as grippy as the MX extra in all conditions. The side wall of the mid hard is much stiffer then the MX extra requiring the tyre to be run with low pressures to improve traction and with that improves your chances of a flat tyre

The 2nd hand MX extra I have fitted for the Kenda by comparison has already done over 900kms in the same sort of conditions including some tar sections on Mick’s birthday Friday ride

In summary the Pirelli Scorpion Mid Hard was disappointing compared against its brother the Pirelli MX extra but better then some cheap remoulded tyres I have used. I have since found after some research thru an industry source that Pirelli released this Mid Hard a few years ago and have not conducted any development of the tyre whilst the MX extra has had a few make overs improving it to the tyre we have been enjoying

The MX extras are a bargain at Sutto’s if you get on this deal

I also have the MX extra fitted to my XR and am very happy with it. It has 708 km on it now and has plenty more rides left in it. TB fitted it to my XR in March for day 2 of my birthday ride and it has done a ton of trail work in some rough stuff since then, including all that rocky stuff at Sunny corner and God knows how many trips on the tar to go to the shop for some durries. All the knobs are still intact with very little sign of the abuse it has had.
In the past we have factored about $30 per 100 km into a ride for tyre wear on the tyre destroying XR’s,the way this MX extra is wearing I can safely say that the wear factor will be about $20 per 100km thanks to the durability of the Pirelli and the great price Sutto supplies them for.

I for one will be fitting another MX extra when I need new rubber for the back of the pig.

After posting the above post,I got to thinking that the kms I said i got out of the MX extra couldn’t be right. I just went to the shed and checked my diary (I keep track of every tyre I fit and note it in a diary) and it has in fact done 1008kms!!!!! Never have I had a tyre make it to a grand, let alone have more to give.
