despite the few odvious reasons,,ie; cost and wear on chain guides and chains due to the tight front curvature around a smaller sprocket, which is the best way to regear a bike,
examples.
1. 14/47 is standard drz400 gearing
i was after the snap out of corners in the tight singles and the lower gear advantage on the hills.2. I wanted lower gearing so I went to a 14/50 combination that = 3 tooth increase on the rear.
3.I then tried 13/50 that is apparently = to a 6 tooth increase.both are sweet but this combo is for tight stuff only and i will be riding some open trails next weekend. i wonder is it better to change the front or rear for the desired result???
4. should I try 13/47??this apparently
a 3 tooth increase from standard as well??

May 21, 2010 at 10:40 pm #179780Hard choice there Boony
You just have to find some middle ground or ride either mostly tight singles and gnarly hill :woohoo: or open fire trailsI think I’m running 14/52
If you wanted to change from one to the other I guess the smaller front sprocket would be the easier one
My 2 cents worth mate
Cheers
MurphMay 22, 2010 at 1:44 am #17978313/50, holly crap Boony you must have a top speed of about 80kph. I found 14/47 would climb any thing and if ya want more snap of corners us the clutch more.
I,m currently running 14/44 and still have no problems climbing, yet will do fire trail speeds (100+) with ease.
If I were you I would go back to the 14 on front.

gone back to 14/50, will see on a short ride tomorrow, I was topping out at 125ks with 13/50 but it was sweet in the forests.
May 22, 2010 at 3:03 am #179789I/m running 13/47 Boony and find it good for all terrain. Down at the Kowen Forest ride there was some really tight single thrpough the pine trees, some rocky hills and some nice flowing trails and it did it all with no drama’s. Can’t say the same about the rider though
.
Wheel stands in 3rd gear without too much trouble as well.
May 22, 2010 at 3:51 am #179790now that poses the million dollar question,,whats the ratio difference from runnning your 13/47 against my 14/50??????this what I am trying to figure out???
Boony.

I run 14/52 on the kato and love it, Imo keep the 14 front and change rear, This will give less wear on the chain-thus less on the sprockets. Mate on his banana is 14/50 and it seems to get to about 100ks -sound like thats as far as it wants to go, then get over 120 and it settles down and just starts to pull again :S  (120 is way fast enough for me, start to worry about brown stains after that – i ride for monday)

May 22, 2010 at 10:30 am #179792If 1 on the front is equal to 3 on the rear, then it should be the same. We can compere one day when we ride together.

May 22, 2010 at 11:06 am #179813I think my front is 14 and the back I dropped it down to 39 is this ok because I feel like it suits me

Goes to show how gearing is dependant on where you ride. That to me is desert racer spec. I am truckin’ 13/50 on a 250 4T.STM
May 22, 2010 at 11:24 am #179818The Xr is a work horse bike and it will climb up most stuff I dropped the rear and shorten the chain and it has heaps of legs to keep up to ktm 450 eurotrash bikes
May 22, 2010 at 11:40 am #179819Hiya
Again the choice must be made
Boony whinged about 125km/h being top speed
Depends on what the hell your into
Me and my boy are pretty sick and love the more vertical shit//// so we gear a little lower
I rode my 525 to work today (mainly through the dirt), just got sick of the powerless 110 postie
a bit trickie getting the larger bike over the treddly bridge :side:
On thinking back I did try a 13/50 or 52
Felt like a bloody moto-x bike
Keep experimenting like I did
You will find what is best for what ya doin
Cheers
MurphMay 22, 2010 at 11:56 am #179820How long is a piece of string Boony. Whatever suits you, your bike and your terrain is the answer. Only you know that.
I am keen to hear what you decide on.
